Helga Plankensteiner

Helga Plankensteiner (born August 1, 1968 in Innichen ) is an Italian jazz musician ( alto and baritone saxophone , also clarinet , vocals , composition ).

Live and act

Plankensteiner studied classical saxophone at the Tyrolean State Conservatory in Innsbruck with Florian Bramböck and jazz at the Trento Conservatory. She also attended jazz workshops with Dick Oatts , Steve Slagle , Gary Bartz , Bobby Watson , Bob Bonisolo, Heinrich von Kalnein and Sandro Gibellini.

In 1994 she appeared as a singer in the Threepenny Opera in Meran and the Rocky Horror Show in Bozen. Her own projects are the international women's band Fifth Side , the El Porcino Organic quartet , the Helga Plankensteiner quintet with an homage to Frida Kahlo and the sextet Plankton . With his adaptation of Franz Schubert's Winterreise , she became internationally known. She also led the Balkan jazz band Revensch and Barionda, an ensemble with four baritone saxophones and drums.

Plankensteiner played at important festivals such as Verona Jazz, Nice Jazz Festival , Alpentöne, Jazz Festival San Sebastian and Jazz Festival Bucharest. She belonged to the Carla Bley Big Band and can also be heard on albums with Dani Felber , with the Torino Jazz Orchestra , Mauro Ottolini, Giovani Leonesse and the Wolfgang Schmidtke Orchestra ( Monk ). She also worked with soloists such as Tom Harrell , Dusko Goykovich , Valery Ponomarev , Francesco Cafiso , Uri Caine , and the Italian Sax Ensemble .

Prizes and awards

In 1999 Plankensteiner won the big band competition of the Associazione musicisti italiani di jazz in Siena; In 2000 she reached the finals of the Orchester National de Jazz competition in Paris. In 2009 she was named among the top 10 new talents in Italy by the specialist magazine Musica Jazz . In 2018 she was awarded the jazz prize of the city of Innsbruck.
