The Musée Nicéphore-Niépce is a photography museum in Chalon-sur-Saône in the Saône-et-Loire department . It is named after the photography pioneer Nicéphore Niépce , who lived in nearby Saint-Loup-de-Varennes . The core of the museum, which opened in April 1972, is Jules Chevrier's collection from 1860, dedicated to the subject of Niépce. Its holdings include around three million photographic images of various processes, plus more than a million negatives , over 1500 cameras , including the first five ever built and about 8,000 relevant books.
