Tania Chen

Tania Caroline Chen (* 1974 or 1975 in London ) is a British pianist who performs as a soloist primarily in the fields of new music and new improvisational music .

Live and act

Chen, who began playing the piano at the age of six, received piano lessons in Great Britain and Australia, where she continued to grow up. Back in London, she studied at the Royal College of Music in the 1990s , then at Goldsmiths College with John Tilbury , where she graduated with honors.

Chen has performed and recorded the piano works of John Cage , Morton Feldman , Earle Brown and Cornelius Cardew ; She has also interpreted compositions by Chris Newman , Andrew Poppy , Michael Parsons , Luc Ferrari , John Lely , Li-Chuan Chon and James Saunders , as well as modern classics such as Arnold Schoenberg , Anton Webern , Erik Satie and Alexander Scriabin . She also has with Stewart Lee ,Steve Beresford ( Ointment ), John Edwards , Mark Sanders , Rhodri Davies , Thurston Moore , David Toop , Jon Raskin and Andrea Centazzo improvised. Now based in California, the album Ocean of Storms (2017) was created with Wadada Leo Smith , Henry Kaiser and William Winant ; She has also played regularly with Bryan Day and Ben Salomon in the band Bad Jazz and recorded three albums. She works with Gino Robair and Tom Djll in the electronic band Tender Buttons .

In addition, Chen created her own sound compositions, supplementing the piano with voice, electronics and video. Her commissions include Strands, Themes for a Story, and Icons of Elegance , performed by instrumental soloists and ensembles in London, the United States, and Asia.
