Band history

Cooper and Hammond both grew up in Maldon , Essex and have known each other since they were 14 years old. In the mid-1980s they both formed the band A Primary Industry with three other musicians . The band's debut album, released in 1986, was already titled Ultramarine .

Cooper and Hammond later moved to London. After A Primary Industry broke up , they both formed the band Ultramarine . Their first release was the single Wyndham Lewis , the lyrics of which they took from a spoken word recording by the artist of the same name from the 1940s. In April 1990 her debut album Folk was released on the Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule . They became known to a larger audience with their second album Every Man and Woman is a Star , released in 1991 on Brainiak Records .

In 1992 the band toured the USA with Meat Beat Manifesto and Orbital, and in 1993 with Björk through the USA and Europe.

For the 1993 released album United Kingdoms , the band worked with the musician Robert Wyatt , among others . The single Kingdom , which was released from the album, reached the British charts in July 1993, making it the band's biggest hit. In 1994, David McAlmont contributed the vocals to the single Hymn written by Kevin Ayers . In 1995, the fourth studio album Bel Air was released on Blanco y Negro Records . After the album A User's Guide was released in 1998, no new material was initially released.

From 2002 Paul Hammond produced new pieces of music solo under pseudonyms such as Further Details and Iken . In 2003 the compilation album Companion (Every Man And Woman Is A Star Versions) was released on LTM Recordings .

The multi-year break ended in 2010 when the band performed live for the first time on selected occasions. In 2011, the band released two new singles, Find A Way and Acid / Butch . The sixth studio album This Time Last Year followed in September 2013 . Her seventh album Signals Into Space was released in 2019 . This album was conceived over a period of three years by Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond and contains four songs that were co-written with the North American musician Anna Domino. In Signal Into Space there are also contributions of saxophonist Iain Ballamy and percussionist and vibraphonist Ric Elsworth . It was recorded and mixed in London with Andy Ramsay from Stereolab and mastered by Noel Summerville.
