Hatfield and the North

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hatfield and the North is a progressive rock band from the Canterbury scene , which existed from October 1972 to June 1975 and then reformed several times.

history

It emerged from the Delivery group with the brothers Phil (guitar, from Matching Mole ) and Steve Miller ( keyboard instruments ), Pip Pyle (drums, from Gong ) and Richard Sinclair (vocals and bass, from Caravan ). After a few concerts still under the name "Delivery" and the replacement of Steve Miller by Dave Sinclair (from Matching Mole and Caravan), the group renamed itself to "Hatfield and the North". Before the first recordings, however, Dave Sinclair was replaced by Dave Stewart from Egg . Steve Miller founded a new formation for Delivery.

Two albums were recorded, the debut named after the band Hatfield and the North and The Rotters' Club , on which the background vocals were from the "Northettes": Amanda Parsons, Barbara Gaskin and Ann Rosenthal. On the 1974 "Crisis Tour" Steve Miller and Lol Coxhill (also formerly with Delivery) appeared in the duo as opening act, and Coxhill usually supported "Hatfield" on the track Mumps .

After separating from Hatfield and the North, Phil Miller, Dave Stewart and Pip Pyle, along with Alan Gowen from Gilgamesh, formed the National Health group . Hatfield and Gilgamesh had given a few concerts together, including a "Double Quartet" set, which in a way anticipated the National Health formation.

Reunion

In March 1990, the group reformed briefly to record a television show with Phil Miller, Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle along with Sophia Domancich (keyboard, Pyle's girlfriend at the time and bandmate from "Equip'Out").

Another formation with Alex Maguire from Pyle's group “ Bash! ", Who replaced Domancich, gave concerts between 2005 and 2006. On some of them, Pyle, who had a broken ankle and was also curing a back operation, was replaced by Mark Fletcher from the group" In Cahoots ". Pyle died in August 2006 after returning from a Hatfield concert in Groningen . After Pyle's death, Hatfield played a few concerts with Mark Fletcher, including at the Canterbury Festival in October 2006.

Between 2005 and 2006 the group also released the two archive collections Hatwise Choice and Hattitude with recordings of the classic Miller-Pyle-Sinclair-Stewart formation, which are distributed by the British Internet label Burning Shed .
