David "Dave" Sinclair (born November 24, 1947 in Herne Bay , Kent , England ) is a British pianist , keyboardist , composer and singer. He is best known as a founding and long-term member of the progressive rock band Caravan , which played an important role in the multifaceted Canterbury School . He composed some of their classical pieces for Caravan, e. B. "For Richard", "Nine Feet Underground", "The Dabsong Conshirtoe" and "Proper Job / Back To Front". His e-piano and organ playing together with Pye Hastings singing was characteristic of the caravan sound of the band's first years.

Musical career

Sinclair had played with his cousin Richard (bass, vocals), Pye Hastings (guitar, vocals) and Richard Coughlan (drums) in the group Wilde Flowers , which broke up in 1967. The four musicians formed Caravan in early 1968, and Dave initially stayed with the band for the first three albums. He then worked on the first solo album End of an Ear by the former Wilde Flowers and Soft Machine drummer and singer Robert Wyatt and then joined his newly formed band Matching Mole , but left them in early 1972 after the release of their first album and a European tour again.

In the meantime Richard Sinclair had also left Caravan and joined the band Delivery in 1972 - this then went on with the formation of Hatfield and the North , and Dave also joined this band, but left them in 1973 before the recording of the first Hatfield and the North Album to return to Caravan. This time he stayed again for three albums up to and including 1975.

From 1975 he made recordings with various musicians, including guitarist Mark Hewins and bassist Graham Flight (formerly Wilde Flowers), for a solo album, which was released in 1993 as Moon over Man on Voiceprint . At the same time, some of these musicians founded the band The Polite Force - they released the album Canterbury Knights , recorded in 1976/77 , on which Sinclair also played. In 1978 he played on a tour with the band Camel .

1979–82 and 1990–2002 he worked again with Caravan. Afterwards, Sinclair has returned to his solo career devoted, among other things, with concerts in Japan and two in 2003 released solo albums: Full Circle and Into the Sun .
