In the Land of Gray and Pink is the third studio album by the British progressive rock band Caravan . It was released on Deram Records in 1971 and is considered a classic of the Canterbury sound .

Creation and publication

The album was recorded from late 1970 to early 1971 at AIR London Studios and the studios of Decca Records and released in September 1971 on the Decca label Deram. In the Land of Gray and Pink is the last album Caravans in the original line-up, as Dave Sinclair left the band in 1971 and then initially continued to work with Robert Wyatt . According to Pye Hastings , Sinclair was said to have been dissatisfied with Caravan's earnings.

In the Land of Gray and Pink was first released on CD in 1989. Remastered versions with unreleased bonus tracks and alternative versions were released in 2001 and 2011, the latter with a surround mix by Steven Wilson .

style

Caravan play melodic Progressive Rock influenced by the Canterbury sound on the album. The guitar is more in the background than the organ, flute and saxophone, there are influences from folk , easy listening and improvisational music . The humorous lyrics and the artwork are pervaded by pastoral and fantastic motifs.

In the Land of Gray and Pink did not make it into the charts, but it still helped Caravan achieve a breakthrough. Today the album is considered the band's masterpiece and timeless classic of Canterbury sound . The music magazine eclipsed judges that long live “from a feel-good factor that amazes” and voted it 31st on its list of the 150 most important prog albums. In June 2015, the renowned trade journal Rolling Stone voted the album 34th of the 50 best progressive rock albums of all time .
