The Tangent is a progressive rock - supergroup that in 2003 as a side project of the band Parallel or 90 Degrees (in short: Po90 ) was founded. She became known through appearances at many international progressive rock festivals .

history

The group's history began in 1999 when Po90 performed together with the Flower Kings . At that time, Andy Tillison was busy collecting ideas for the next Po90 album More Exotic Ways to Die . Impressed by the Flower Kings albums, he decided to record the more "progressive" pieces of the new album separately. Some time after the publication of More Exotic Ways to Die , Tillison handed over the demo recordings to the Flower Kings crew member Ian Oakley, who a little later became the manager of The Tangent. Roine Stolt , Zoltan Csörsz and Jonas Reingold spontaneously offered to take part on this album. This line-up was completed with saxophonist David Jackson and Po90 keyboardist Sam Baine. The debut album The Music That Died Alone was enthusiastically received by the trade press.

Several line-ups followed - in 2007 The Tangent only existed as a trio, consisting of Tillison, Reingold and Jaime Salazar -, two further studio and two live albums. In 2008 the fourth studio album, Not as Good as the Book was released . It consists of two CDs, the first of which contains seven comparatively short songs, the second only two pieces of over 20 minutes each. The concept album describes how in 2008 the world was accidentally destroyed with the help of the album Relayer by Yes , and 80,000 years later scientists are trying to reconstruct people's lives using progressive rock CDs that have survived from this time.

In 2008 The Tangent also appeared together with the Swedish progressive rock band Beardfish . Since that same year bassist Reingold, guitarist Jonsson and drummer Salazar announced their departure because they saw no development in the band, Andy Tillison began to work with the members of Beardfish. In June of this year he officially announced that the four members of Beardfish would now also play at The Tangent, which was confirmed by Rikard Sjöblom . This made The Tangent an octet for the first time in the band's history. The new line-up made their first appearance at the Summer's End Festival in September 2008.

The following year the line-up was changed again and now consisted of the founding members Andy Tillson, Theo Travis and Guy Manning. Paul Burgess on drums and Jonathan Barrett on bass joined the band as new members . This line-up, with which the follow-up album Down and Out was recorded in Paris and London , was the first to consist exclusively of British musicians. After that, several line-up changes took place and new studio recordings, unpublished archive material and live recordings appeared.

style

The debut album The Music That Died Alone was still heavily influenced by the Canterbury sound and the retro prog of the Flower Kings . The Canterbury share was gradually reduced, at the latest from Not as Good as the Book The Tangent Progressive Rock with influences from the 70s and 80s. This makes you the second known retro prog supergroup after Transatlantic .
