Grace for Drowning is the second solo album by British musician Steven Wilson . It was published by Kscope in September 2011 .

Creation and publication

After Wilson's first solo album Insurgentes in 2009, he worked again with Porcupine Tree on The Incident and with Blackfield on Welcome to My DNA , he also remastered several albums by King Crimson . In January 2010 he began writing and recording his second solo album, which he described as his biggest project to date. Numerous well-known guest musicians, v. a. from the progressive rock scene, were involved in the recordings. Wilson composed all the pieces himself, played e.g. B. the vocals, guitars, bass and keyboards, mixed and produced the album. Lasse Hoile accompanied the project photographically and cinematically.

Grace for Drowning was finally released in September 2011 as a double album in a jewel case, digipak and on vinyl. The Blu-ray edition contains the album in high-resolution stereo and 5.1 surround sound as well as bonus titles, demos, videos and picture galleries. In addition to the double album and the Blu-ray, the deluxe edition contains a third CD with outtakes and demos as well as a 120-page book. The album came with two bonus tracks in the iTunes Store , and a FLAC download was made available from Burning Shed from November . For promotional purposes there was the download single Postcard with the title of the same name from the album and remixes in October 2011 . A week later a mobile app was released with information about Grace for Drowning and the tour, with photos and audio and video streams, e.g. Some of the tracks not published on the album.

The tour through Europe and North America finally began in October and continued in North and South America and Europe in April 2012. Wilson et al. a. accompanied by Theo Travis and Marco Minnemann . Get All You Deserve , the live album for the tour, was released in September 2012 and contained the new track Luminol , the 2013 studio version of which can be found on The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) .

Grace for Drowning is often assigned to ( new ) art rock or progressive rock , with influences from jazz rock and from the music of King Crimson. The compositions and arrangements are varied and often complex. There are calm, spherical, melodic, hectic, hard and bombastic passages. In addition to typical rock instruments, flutes, strings and electronic effects are also used. The atmosphere is often gloomy or melancholy.

The album was received mostly positively. Was criticized z. B. on Allmusic , it is just another album in Wilson's long discography that sounds similar to the others. Christian Rode from Babyblauen Seiten complained: “The album offers a lot of perfectly produced melancholy-wistful euphony, but it doesn't really grab me.” Jürgen Wissing praised it: “Because of its atmospheric density with a huge range of moods and expression 'Grace for Drowning' has become an extremely varied, interesting and exciting album, perfectly produced and very cleverly put together from many styles.
