The Thorns is an American rock group that was founded in 2002 as a joint project by three singer-songwriters Shawn Mullins , Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge .

Band history

Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins, three multi-instrumentalists, music producers and songwriters, initially only knew each other briefly, but always worked with the same people. In the spring of 2002, the idea for a joint project emerged, which initially only took place on a small scale, but then the interest of the label Aware Records , who signed the still nameless project. The first demo recordings are made , which are later edited by producer Brendan O'Brien , keyboardist Roy Bittan and drummer Jim Keltner . The name comes about by chance when Rolling Stone confused the song Thorns with the band name in an interview .

The self-titled debut album was released on July 7, 2003 and reached number 62 on the Billboard charts . The Thorns toured Germany in the summer of the same year as the opening act for Dixie Chicks . In the US, the group toured as an acoustic project and in support of the Jayhawks and later with John Mayer . The project has played a few concerts since then.

Music genre

Their only album to date, The Thorns, is at home in rock / folk rock and stylistically located between the Eagles , America and Crosby, Stills & Nash . Giuliano Benassi from Laut.de criticized the somewhat too smooth production and the lack of originality.
