Wallingford is a city and civil parish in England . It belongs to the South Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire and is located on the Thames . In 2001 Wallingford had 6,842 residents.

Alfred the Great built a fortified city with strong walls at Wallingford to protect against Viking raids. The origins of the castle of Wallingford are the time of the Conqueror Wilhelm . After the Battle of Hastings , William crossed the Thames at Wallingford so that he could attack London (1066).

Wallingford was important during the reign of Stephen of Blois .
