The Legion is a Swedish black metal band from Jönköping that was founded in 1996 under the name Tyrant .

history

The band was founded in 1996 by Kung Trollheim (electric bass, vocals), Lord Thurisaz (drums), David Svartz (electric guitar) and Tiwaz (electric guitar) under the name Tyrant. Together they recorded the demo Rise of the Fallen in 1998 . Kung Trollheim soon left the band and was replaced by bassist Anne "Ahrijan" Marek. In 1999 they changed their name to The Legion. The line-up changed again and now consisted of Anne “Ahrijan” Marek (electric bass), David Svartz (electric guitar), Emil Dragutinovic (drums), Rikard Kottelin (electric guitar) and Lars Martinsson (electric bass, vocals ).

Together they released the first demo Bloodaeons ( Neodawn Productions ) in 2000 and the EP Awakened Fury ( Deepsend Records ) in 2003 . In June 2003 the band went to Abyss Studio to record their debut album Unseen to Creation . The album was released on Listenable Records later that year .

A tour through Europe followed in 2004 . After a short break in 2005, the next album, Revocation , followed in 2006. It was partly recorded in the Endarker studio of Marduk bassist Magnus Devo Andersson , and partly in the Art Decay studio of guitarist Kottelin.

The third album A Bliss to Suffer was produced entirely by the band members themselves. It was released through Listenable Records in 2009.

style

The high level of aggressiveness and the high speed of the pieces are particularly characteristic. The Legion is compared to other Swedish black metal bands such as Naglfar , Setherial , Marduk or Dark Funeral . The pieces also have influences from American Death Metal. Dragutinovic, who was Marduk's drummer himself from 2002 to 2007, regards the comparisons of the album Unseen to Creation with Marduk and Dark Funeral as incorrect, but describes the stylistic development as a progress from a dark funeral-like to a more atmospheric, chaotic one , fast and insane black metal.
