In Conspiracy with Satan - A Tribute to Bathory is a tribute album to the Swedish metal band Bathory , which contains exclusively Scandinavian performers. It was released on CD in 1998 as a collaboration between No Fashion Records and Hellspawn Records; David "Blackmoon" Parland , executive producer and owner of Hellspawn Records , was a guitarist on the recordings of Dark Funeral , Necrophobic and War for this album.

Emergence

The tracks were recorded between 1995 and 1997, many of them in the Sunlight Studios by Tomas Skogsberg and The Abyss by Peter Tägtgren , who participated in the Hypocrisy side project The Abyss and was a member of War for a while. The final mastering of the album took place in the cutting room in Stockholm.

Satyricon version of Born for Burning was in 1996 on the compilation Crusade From the North of Moonfog Productions published, Necrophobics Enter the Eternal Fire also in 1996 on their EP Spawned by Evil . Emperors A Fine Day to Die also appeared on the re-release of their debut album In the Nightside Eclipse in the year the tribute album was released . Marduk's recordings of In Conspiracy with Satan and Woman of Dark Desires were added to the 1999 re-release of their demo recording, Fuck Me Jesus .

According to Blackmoon's account, Bathory founder Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg did massive damage to the project. After its presentation, however, Bathory and Black Mark Production tried at the beginning to help the makers of the album in legal and practical matters, but they turned it down. Problems arose between both parties at an early stage, as the former did not agree with the way the latter handled copyrighted material; among other things, a picture by Tony Mottram showing Quorthon in London was used without asking Mottram's permission beforehand. In addition, they did not agree with how the makers took over the lettering and the goat's head from Bathory, and would have preferred if they had designed their own design for the CD. Ultimately, it became legally necessary for Black Mark Production to intervene over royalties and other legal issues, with the record company feeling obligated to act mildly and settling the matter out of court. The person in charge of the compilation took the matter personally, but Quorthon stated that it was never personal and that no attempt was ever made to stop production; there is no reason for it, and only a few groups get tribute albums in their honor. Bathory and Black Mark Production would have seen the album as a great thing not only for Bathory and her followers, but also for the artists involved, as an homage to Bathory's music and history. Bathory's record company only intervened when the makers were about to cause themselves legal problems.

Quorthon also emphasized that he was only showing his side; the other side had been widely viewed as the true version for too long. He himself had never been in personal contact with any person responsible for this project, no one had personal contact with him, yet he was portrayed as a traitor to the underground, as a "sell-out cock-rock star" who had the connection to lost its roots. He, on the other hand, emphasizes that he has come from the underground , that he is still underground and that he never left it with Bathory; one could not be more underground than Bathory; Accusing him of all things sell-out shows the ignorance of some people.

In 2001 Blackmoon announced a second part, which was also intended as revenge against Quorthon and Black Mark Production.

Music genre

The songs come from the first three Bathory albums , with the exception of A Fine Day to Die and Die in Fire . Compared to the originals, there are differences, for example, in the singing, a higher speed and other adaptations to the style of the respective artist.

layout

The original version from No Fashion Records and Hellspawn Records shows the title of the tribute album, with the goat's head from Bathory's debut album Bathory in the background. This can also be seen on the back and the CD label.

The re-release by Hammerheart Records in 2001 uses a different lettering for the title and depicts Countess Báthory Erzsébet , the goat's head was no longer used here. The booklet contains the history of Bathory from the founding up to and including the recordings of Blood Fire Death , as well as pictures of the performers with information on the recordings and quotes from some of the musicians involved on the importance of Bathory for metal and themselves.

Reviews

Quorthon himself said he didn't listen to In Conspiracy with Satan - A Tribute to Bathory , but a fan told him that one of the performers on Call from the Grave tried not only to imitate the intro, but the original recording (in fact, Dark Funeral's version of the song adopts the intro and style of the original, but can be clearly distinguished from Quorthon's original recording with more reverberant vocals by a more powerful production and the singing of mass "Emperor Magus Caligula" Broberg ). This fact, together with the use of the Bathory logo and the copying of the claw designed for Black Mark Production and the rejection of the attempt to make In Conspiracy with Satan - A Tribute to Bathory a legal and official publication, show the extent of the inferiority complexes on this project. Mr. Stalhammar from the Uae Solis webmagazine is also of the opinion that most of the songs were only replayed and not interpreted. He also criticized the concentration on demo recordings and the first three albums and praised Emperors A Fine Day to Die as the exception and best cover.

Evil Dr. Smith from Lords Of Metal metal E-zine, on the other hand, describes the album as a “perfect tribute” to the first three Bathory albums. The only thing missing is a cover from Darkthrone .
