War was a Swedish black metal band whose line-up consists of members of the metal scene of well-known bands and can therefore be described as a "supergroup".

history

War was founded in 1995. The idea for the foundation came up when Tony “IT” Särkkä , David “Blackmoon” Parland (ex- Dark Funeral , Ex- Necrophobic ) and Peter Tägtgren had a discussion after the recordings for the Abruptum album Vi sonus veris nigrae malitiaes in Tägegren's Abyss Studio including the scene, the murder of Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth and the True Satanist Horde founded by IT, an association of members of the Swedish black metal scene. In the course of the conversation the idea came up to record an album and donate all of the proceeds to the True Satanist Horde. There was also discussion of using the proceeds to have Varg Vikernes , who murdered Euronymous, killed by acquaintances in the same prison; IT had been friends with Euronymous and had stated several times at the time that it wanted Vikernes dead.

The band should differentiate itself from the black metal bands that were emerging at the time with theatrical elements, keyboards, female vocals and lyrics about trolls. War differed from these same bands through primitive Black Metal with lyrics mainly about Satan and war; According to Christian Dornbusch and Hans-Peter Killguss, "the satanically disguised war and the› total annihilation ‹seem to originate more from the attempt to violate all moral conventions with an anti-bourgeois gesture" [sic!].

The song I Am Elite caused controversy with the racist lines of text “Stand aside for the superior race. You are nothing but worms " ( 'Come aside for the superior race . You're nothing but worms') and " Niggers and Kikes, stay away " (, niggers and Itzig stays away'). The text was written by IT; IT is, however, partly of Indian descent and Blackmoon distanced himself “clearly from any political interpretations” and stated that he was behind everything that the song says; it is about Christianity against the satanic side, which is meant by the term "master race". He is not a racist; he hates everyone regardless of race and has no problem putting it that way. The song was made in the studio and the band considered dubbing it over and ultimately thought no one would understand what was being sung. The band wouldn't have done it if they had foreseen the reactions.

Although the founding of the band was decided in 1995, the EP Total War was released with IT and Blackmoon on guitars, Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy on drums, Mikael Hedlund (also from Hypocrisy) on bass and Jim "All" Berger from Abruptum, Ophthalamia and Vondur on vocals only in 1997. Like the later releases, it came out on Necropolis Records .

In 1998, the Bathory tribute compilation In Conspiracy with Satan - A Tribute to Bathory , to which the band contributed the piece War .

In 1999 War recorded the album We Are War , this time with All on vocals, Blackmoon on guitar, David "Impious" Larsson from In Aeternum on bass and Lars Szöke, another Hypocrisy member, on drums and guitar. IT had previously turned its back on the black metal scene completely.

In 2001 the band, which had to drop their name because there was already a band with the same name , was put on hold due to internal disputes. Before that, however, the CD We Are ... Total War was released under the new name Total War , on which pieces from both publications were.
