Antonio Parietti
Antonio Parietti y Coll , Catalonian : Antoni Parietti i Coll , (* 1899 in Palma , Balearic Islands , Spain, † 1979 ibid) was a Spanish road construction engineer of Italian descent.
He planned streets, canals and ports. His most famous projects are on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca , the serpentine road to Cala de Sa Calobra (1932) and the road to Cap Formentor , which also leads through the eastern Serra de Tramuntana , on which a memorial was erected for him in 1968.
Life
Parietti was born the son of an Italian and a Mallorcan woman on the Balearic island of Mallorca. After studying civil engineering in Madrid , he returned to the island and from the 1920s began to have a strong influence on the - exclusively tourist-motivated - traffic development of the more than 90 km long mountain range in the north-west of Mallorca.
Projects
Sa Calobra
This 12.5-kilometer-long road was built by hand without the use of any machines, only four kilometers as the crow flies and includes 12 hairpin bends . Opened in 1932, soon after and to this day it was considered a masterpiece of street construction.
The "tie knot ": At the level of Sa Moleta there was no other way to follow the given terrain with the route. So he led the road under her after a loop to compensate for the jump in height. Parietti had the road built without supporting pillars, only with the bridge at Nus de sa Corbata ( Nudo de la Corbata ), the "tie knot " with the 270 ° curve ( 39 ° 49 ′ 55.7 ″ N , 2 ° 48 ′ 58 , 8 ″ O ).
31,000 cubic meters of rock were moved to create this road. Only tar was added as a binding agent.
Formentor cap
The road from Port de Pollença via Platja de Formentor to Cap de Formentor was also built by him in the 1930s . This road runs in a mountainous area and has numerous switchbacks and a short tunnel. The roads, some of which are built on the steep slope, offer numerous panoramas over the coastal mountains. A memorial plaque has been placed in his honor at the Mirador de Mal Pas .
Other Projects
Other projects were the roads to Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Cura and the Puig Major . In addition, a cable car to the Puig Major was planned. However, this project could not be implemented due to the effects of the Spanish Civil War and World War II .
