Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the municipality of Escorca on the northwest coast of the island, in the region ( comarca ) Serra de Tramuntana .
Sa Calobra is a small village on theGeographical location
The village of Sa Calobra is also known as Cases de sa Calobra , as it is just a collection of a few houses. It is located about 32 kilometers northeast of Palma and about one kilometer above the Cala de sa Calobra ("Bay of Sa Calobra ").
There are only two ways to reach the village and the bay, either via the serpentine road MA-2141 or by boat across the sea. The road overcomes a height difference of 682 meters over its 12.5 kilometers. From the parking lot or the ship landing stage of the settlement at Cala de sa Calobra , a 600-meter-long footpath leads to the exit of the famous Torrent de Pareis gorge , which the torrent ( Catalan : torrent) cut into the rock on its way to the sea.
history
Up until 1932 , 32 people lived in the tiny village of Sa Calobra . The village could only be left by sea or by a difficult and dangerous route over hill and dale through the Torrent de Pareis over the highest mountains of Mallorca. So the next town Escorca could be reached, which for its part had no distinct center apart from a church from the 13th century .
The 14-kilometer serpentine route with 12 hairpin bends was planned by the Italian engineer Antonio Paretti and executed in 1932 . Paretti wanted to avoid impairing the mountains as well as the layout of rugged, steep curves. From almost every point on the street you can see four bands of streets.
The serpentine route offers a gentle gradient to the most noticeable point, the "tie knot". At the level of Sa Moleta , Paretti saw only the possibility of making the road circle around itself with a 270 ° curve.
For the work, 31,000 cubic meters of rock were mostly removed by hand and reinstalled along the embankment or on the valley side. Only tar was added as a binding agent.
tourism
During the high season, the village is frequented by thousands of visitors on a few days, most of whom arrive by bus. But already 500 meters into the gorge you will find solitude and enjoy the wonderful view and the beauty of the natural landscape.
Beach
The small beach of Sa Calobra ( Platja de sa Calobra ) is only 50 meters long, has an average width of 20 meters, is stony and offers a lot of shady spots due to the nearby old vegetation. In the high season it is visited by a large number of bathers. In strong westerly winds, bathing is not without risk due to the very strong waves and rocky ground. The bathing zone is not permanently monitored by lifeguards. Small bars are in the immediate vicinity.

On the road there is a daily bus service from Alcúdia to Sa Calobra.
