Bay of Pollença with Port de Pollença

Port de Pollença ( Castilian : Puerto de Pollensa) is a place in the municipality of Pollença on the Balearic island of Mallorca .

geography

Port de Pollença is located in the north of the island on the Bay of Pollença. The place has 6,596 inhabitants (as of 2011). Roads connect it with Pollença inland, Alcúdia in the south and Cap Formentor on the Formentor peninsula. A footpath leads over a pass of the Serra de Tramuntana to Cala Sant Vicenç on the north coast of the island.

Pollença Bay

The Bay of Pollença (Badia de Pollença) is formed by the Formentor and La Victòria peninsulas . It is ten kilometers long and six kilometers wide. The proportions and the mountains on the surrounding peninsulas ensure that there is rarely a swell in the bay; Even more protected conditions can be found in the inner bay between Port de Pollença and the Avançada headland (Punta de l'Avançada: 39 ° 53 ′ 57 ″  N , 3 ° 6 ′ 37 ″  E ). During the summer, a stable sea breeze forms during the day due to the thermals , which is reinforced by the parallel mountain ranges and provides reliable sailing weather. The bay is therefore known as one of the best sailing areas in Europe. The circumnavigator Sir Francis Chichester described the Bay of Pollença as one of the most beautiful of all.

Port de Pollença was founded as a fishing village . After the onset of tourism , of course, there was also an opportunity here to develop a new source of income. In contrast to many other holiday resorts, there are hardly any large hotel blocks in Port de Pollença; rather, it is mostly apartment houses and smaller hotels that have been built in a loose style. The only larger hotel complex is relatively inconspicuous away from the coast, far outside the town center, halfway to Alcúdia.

The old town center has grown around the market square (Plaça Capllonch, 39 ° 54 ′ 27 ″  N , 3 ° 4 ′ 53 ″  E ). The beach promenade is closed to car traffic and is shaded by palm trees. The promenade is lined with hotels and restaurants; the opposite beach sections are used by many hotels for the exclusive use of their guests.

At the southern end of the pedestrian zone, the streets to Pollença and Alcúdia meet. At the same time there is the entrance to the area of the yacht and fishing port, which is built into the bay. The port is one of the largest marinas on the island and is home to the Reial Club Nàutic Port de Pollença . This makes it the only “royal” marina on the Balearic Islands besides the marina in the island's capital, Palma de Mallorca .

Behind the marina there is a wide sandy beach along the old main road to Alcúdia. Some older hotels, apartment buildings, pubs, restaurants and shops are on the opposite side of the street from the beach. The beach continues across the entire width of the bay until just before Alcúdia. It is one of the longest continuous sandy beaches on the island.

The most beautiful part of the town is to the north of the town center, on the Passeig Vora Mar promenade (further on: Carrer Colón). This part of the promenade is also closed to car traffic. The footpath leads - densely lined with large pine and pine trees - between shady small sandy beaches and spacious old villas.

To the west of the town center, newer blocks of flats have been built as the tourist industry in town grew and workers settled there. The place is limited there by the new bypass road to Cap Formentor at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana . To the west of the bypass, at the entrance to the Vall de Bóquer , was the city of Bocchoris in ancient times .

tourism

Port de Pollença was discovered early on by the British as a vacation spot for high demands. To this day the place - unusual for Mallorcan standards - is mainly frequented by British and Spanish tourists. The prices for accommodation and land are also significantly higher than on the Platja de Palma or in the tourist regions in the south and east of Mallorca. This means that there is no mass or cheap tourism in Port de Pollença.

The beach slopes very gently towards the water. It is therefore well suited for small children to play, but less suitable for swimming. The region is a popular destination for scuba divers . The largest German-speaking surfing and sailing school in the Mediterranean is based in Port de Pollença, and there are a few other boat rentals.

Port de Pollença is also a suitable starting point for hikes . Numerous footpaths in the area lead through the Serra de Tramuntana.

A popular hike leads to Cala Bóquer . The starting point is Finca Bóquer on the bypass road.

Military use

Numerous areas in the north of Mallorca are used for military purposes. In the immediate vicinity of Port de Pollença, the stretch of coast between the northern end of the town and Punta de l'Avançada is a restricted military area .

During the Spanish Civil War , the bay was the base of a naval squadron of the German Condor Legion , which was equipped with Heinkel He 59 , and supported the Spanish nationalists .

Today, in addition to SAR units, seaplanes from Grupo 43 of the Spanish Air Force of the Canadair CL-215 type are stationed there, which are used to fight forest fires , among other things . Practice flights can be followed almost daily.
