The Aeródromo Militar de Pollença is a military airfield on the Spanish Balearic -Insel Mallorca . It is located around ten kilometers east of the center of the city of Pollença in the bay of Port de Pollença . According to the Spanish AIP, the Aeródromo is approved as an airfield for seaplanes and helicopters .
history
The activities of aviation with flying boats on the Balearic Island go back to the year 1921. At that time the first civil aviation companies from the port of Palma de Mallorca and from the bay of Alcúdia used seaplanes for passenger transport.
On November 25, 1936, Major Ramon Franco Bahamonde visited the bays of Alcudia and Pollença as the then head of a site-finding committee to determine the final location of the military base for seaplanes. The commission's decision was made in favor of the Pollença site because this site offered better conditions for defense against an attack from the sea. In the same year, several Dornier whales were relocated to the Bay of Pollença. It was the first time that military aviation used this location as a base for seaplanes.
At the beginning of 1937, after completion of the construction work at the Pollença base, the official inauguration took place and became the base of the squadron Grupo de Hidros G-62 , which also operated ten machines of the Italian-built seaplanes CRDA Cant Z.501 . These sea scouts and long-range bombers were deployed from Mallorca on the side of the nationalists in the Spanish Civil War . During the Spanish Civil War, Pollença was also the base of the German Seefliegerstaffel 88 , which was equipped with Heinkel He 59 .
After the Second World War , the military base became the base of the Escuadrilla de Salvamento , SAR , which carries out search and rescue services for emergencies in the air and seafaring on behalf of the state . The 50th Escuadrilla de Salvamento was equipped in 1954 with Grumman SA-16 , a long-range amphibious aircraft made by the American manufacturer Grumman. The second season, the 58th Escuadrilla de Salvamento , used four Dornier Do 24s from 1958 .
today
The 43rd Grupo de Fuerzas Aéreas has been stationed at the Aeródromo de Pollença since 1991 . The primary task of the unit is to fight forest fires and search and rescue with their aircraft. The military base is a training center for firefighters across Spain.
