The Roadburn Festival has been an internationally recognized festival for Doom and Extreme Metal that has taken place annually since 1995 and also includes performers from the sub-genres of post-industrial , post-punk , psychedelic rock and alternative . The Dutch Festival in Tilburg holds up to 4,000 spectators due to the performing artists, the family framework and concert venues internationally for performers and spectators as legendary . Many of the performing artists publish the recordings of their performances as live albums, including Ulver , Neurosis , Candlemass , Indian , Earthless and Year of No Light .
history
The festival began as a complement to the Roadburn.com website, which has been active since the 1990s . The initiators of the website and the festival are Jurgen van den Brand and Walter Hoeijmakers. Other current members of the organizational team are Frens Frijns and Becky Laverty. The first ten of the annual events were designed to be small with bands advertised on the website. In the beginning, the events changed place and date and took place on a single day. Van den Brand and Hoeijmakers started to live stream appearances on their website early on, increasing the popularity of the event and the site. In 2003 and 2004 the festival took place in the Effenaar in Eindhoven . With 450 tickets sold at the time and Fu Manchu as headliner, the festival was sold out for the first time in 2003. In 2005 the festival moved to Tilburg. With this tenth festival, today's popular form of the festival established itself with various popular interpreters of the metal underground and a duration of four days in Venue 013 in the city of Tilburg.
In 2006, the festival, which was sold out again, offered space for 1,750 paying visitors, 70% of whom, according to the organizer, came from abroad and not from the Netherlands. A trend that has continued over the years and requires an audience from North and South America, Asia, Europe and Australia, with only a small proportion of Dutch visitors.
In 2010 some of the booked bands were prevented by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull . After the eruption with massive ash ejection on Wednesday, April 15th, European air traffic came to a standstill, which is why Shrinebuilder , Jesu , Evoken and Candlemass , among others , had to cancel their performances. Other bands were stuck in Tilburg for several days. The international, purely improvising space rock band Øresund Space Collective picked up on the outbreak and processed the events during their performance in Stage 01, which was then called Bat Cave. The performance was published by the band as At the Roadburn 2010 . The artwork also alludes to the volcanic eruption. Due to the cancellation of a total of 16 bands, the entire billing had to be changed. EyeHateGod jumped in as the headliner of the afterburner event and, after arriving from Italy, played a two and a half hour show.
The organizers changed the ticket sales mode in 2014, as in previous years the entire ticket contingent had been sold online within a few minutes. By 2015, the number of cards made available rose to 4,000.

The festival is considered family event, exist in which no major barriers between bands, organization and fans, but none of the usual at a festival side effects such as mosh pits , stage diving , flickering smartphone seas , Selfie -Jäger or pubertal noise squads . The focus of the festival is on bringing together a "pleasure-oriented audience and exquisite bands [...] in a family atmosphere". The performers booked are rarely in the backstage area during the festival , and instead can often be found in front of the stages as spectators who “share the enthusiasm for the sound”.
Although the festival is primarily oriented towards metal underground, it also offers performers from the post-industrial and alternative genres a podium.

The line-up is put together by van den Brand and Hoeijmakers. Both organizers start with optional band lists. The listed bands are contacted by Hoeijmakers, who over decades made contacts with bands, artist agents and managers. From the exploratory discussions with the bands and their representatives, in addition to acceptances and rejections, other potential actors for the festival emerge. This process of participatory festival design begins more than a year before the event, according to Hoeijmakers.
Locations
The main venue is the Venue 013 concert hall at Veermarktstraat 44 , located in the city center of Tilburg , other venues such as Het Patronaat, V39 and Cul de Sac are in the immediate vicinity of the concert hall, but have varied over the years. The cul de sac was only added as an official venue in 2014. The Midi Theater, which closed in 2011, also served as a venue in 2010 and 2011. The anchoring of the festival in the city center of Tilburg shapes the character of the event and is referred to as the “breeding ground for the unique atmosphere of the festival”. All venues are in Tilburg, which means that the guests move around and live in the city and are not "crammed into the rural nowhere on fields and between construction fences".
The main stage has been the Jupiler Zaal of the concert hall Venue 013, which has been holding 3,000 visitors until November 2015. The hall was rebuilt in 2015 and since then has a capacity of up to 3,700 people. Another hall is Stage 01, which is also located in the hall and can accommodate up to 300 visitors. Opposite Venue 013 is the V39, the youth center is home to information and merchandising stands , panel discussions and the Roadburn Cinema, which is reserved for documentaries, during the festival . The V39 functioned as a second concert hall in 2009, adding a third stage to the event for the first time in 2009.
Since then, other locations have been developed for the event, first the multifunctional Midi Theater was added, after its closure in 2011 the former Catholic monastery building with a church ambience Het Patronat, located on Veemarktstraat 33, was added. The alternative pub Cul de Sac has been another festival venue since 2014 . The Cul de Sac is located on the central pedestrian zone on the Heuvel, which is equipped with cafés and bars and called Weirdo Canyon by the organizers . The concert venues beyond Venue 013 have limited capacity, which means frequent waiting times. The Het Patronat can hold up to 600 visitors, while the Cul de Sac is the smallest concert room with a capacity of around 150 people.

Accommodation and meals
Since the Roadburn mainly sells 3- and 4-day tickets, the majority of visitors spend the entire festival on site. Since the event has been taking place in Tilburg for several days, an associated camping area has existed. This is open from Thursday to Monday and serves as a supplementary event location. The campsite has sanitary facilities, hot water, electricity and small grocery stores. The official camping area of the festival, the Roadburn Campsite, was based on the area of the nearby safari park Beekse Bergen near Hilvarenbeek until 2015 . A shuttle bus ran to and from the park. For the festival of the year 2016, the organizers acquired another campsite in Tilburg and thus in the immediate vicinity of the event locations as the new Roadburn Campsite . The Stadscamping Tilburg is situated the Tilburg railway station close to a disused and redesigned for leisure complex track system.
In addition to the overnight accommodation on the campsite, many visitors stay in hotels in Tilburg. Many of the local bars, especially those on the Heuvel, offer special festival menus at moderate prices during the Roadburn period.

The main stage in Venue 013 is mainly reserved for the sub-styles of Doom and Extreme Metal . Performers from the avant-garde, post-industrial and alternative, on the other hand, appear increasingly on the side stages. Overlaps such as the appearance as headlining Fields of the Nephilim in 2015 at Venue 013 are common. In the V39 there are open discussion rounds declared as Q&A or Clinic & More and screenings of documentaries called Roadburn Cinema about bands, scenes and styles that can be found on the Roadburn. In addition to film screenings, panel discussions and workshops by and with the musicians, who mostly follow a daily theme, there was also a discussion with label owners about their aspirations and ideals in 2015. As a further item on the program, the festival offers the Roadburn Metal Disco in the foyer of the bar des Venue 013, which will be designed by musicians from the festival as DJs on the evenings of the event . Parts of the Clinic & More supporting program will also be presented on the camping site.
The fanzine Weirdo Canyon Dispatch , written by the organizers, is published daily during the festival days as a medium for information and exchange . The 1000-unit fanzine is distributed every morning in the foyer of 013. In addition to reviews and evaluations of the concerts and events of the previous day, the magazine contains an overview of the current day and recommendations from the organizers.
Sunday is advertised as an afterburner as a partially separate festival. Separate tickets have been sold for the Roadburn Afterburner since the festival day began. During this festival day, which takes place exclusively in 013, some performers appear who have already played during the previous festival days.
In 2015, a cinematic-oriented program item was added, in which the festival's interpreters provide musical accompaniment to films they have chosen themselves. Sólstafir chose the western The Flight of the Raven , Goblin the horror films Zombie and Suspiria .
Roadburn Records
Roadburn Records , which is connected to the festival organization, has existed as a sub-label of the independent label Burning World Records since 2007 . The label's artists include Bongripper , Chelsea Wolfe , Wolves in the Throne Room , Nadja and Nachtmystium . The label is dedicated to those styles that also correspond to the festival. Roadburn Records mainly publishes live recordings from Doom and Extreme Metal, as well as from post-industrial, avant-garde and alternative.
