Goblin is an Italian progressive rock band.
history
In 1974 the drummer Carlo Bordini and the singer Tony Tartarini founded the band Cherry Five together with the keyboardist Claudio Simonetti and the guitarist Massimo Morante , but they were also supposedly in contact with the producer of the famous English progressive rock band Yes Eddie Offord, who wanted to record an album in England with the four musicians under the band name Oliver . However, due to an extended stay in the USA with the band Yes, he was no longer available as a producer, so that after a few appearances and sporadic recording sessions, the members packed their bags again and went back to Italy, where it was also titled Cherry Five Record album.
Then the band broke up again until 1975 director Dario Argento Massimo Morante and Claudio Simonetti from Cherry Five brought them back together with the drummer of the Italian prog rock band Etna Agostino Marangolo, the bassist Fabio Pignatelli and the keyboardist Maurizio Guarini so that they should write and record a soundtrack for his film Profondo Rosso . The band adopted the name Goblin for this. After working together it was decided not to break up the band, but rather to record the album Roller (1976).
In the same year a soundtrack was devoted to the film Perché si uccidono . The soundtrack was not played under the name Goblin , but under the name Il Reale Impero Britannico . In the years that followed, the band continued to compose soundtracks, mostly for horror films, and played another concept album , Il Fantastico Viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark (1978).
The band split up in 1989, but got back together again in 1998 for the theme song to the film Mind's Eye and in 2001 for the soundtrack to Dario Argento film Non ho sonno . After that, the band broke up again because of inconsistencies during production.
In 2005 there was another reunion. The new studio album entitled BackToTheGoblin 2005 was recorded by the classic line-up. However, instead of Claudio Simonetti, long-time band member Maurizio Guarini was at work on the keyboard. After the album, the band broke up again, but came back together again in 2009 for a series of concerts with the same line-up. There were again disagreements within the band, so that this reunion did not last.
The band has grown into cult along with Argento's films , and their many soundtracks and two studio albums have been re-released multiple times, giving Goblin a large fan base over the years.
Currently (2011) the band has two formations. The two founding members Claudio Simonetti and Massimo Morante started the project "New Goblin" in 2010. Maurizio Guarini is the second keyboard player. The other half of the classic line-up, Fabio Pignatelli and Agostino Marangolo, has also been active since 2010 under the name "Goblin Rebirth". Keyboardist Aidan Zammit was involved in the last "Goblin" album in 2005.
