Tygers of Pan Tang is a British heavy metal band. The name of the band comes from the novel Stormbringer by Michael Moorcock .
The band combines the heavy metal of previous bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple with punk rock . This new style became generally known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWoBHM), among which bands such as B. Diamond Head , Iron Maiden , Saxon and the early Def Leppard can be counted.
history
The band was formed in 1978 by Jess Cox (vocals), Robb Weir (guitar), Richard Laws aka Rocky (bass) and Brian Dick (drums) in Whitley Bay in North East England . Her first album Wild Cat was released in 1980 and rose to number 18 on the UK album charts . After the album was released, John Sykes was hired as the second guitarist in 1980. Jon Deverill replaced Cox in 1981, who left the band after musical differences. With this line-up, the second album Spellbound , which reached number 33, and the third album Crazy Nights (number 51) were released in the same year .
Sykes left the band in 1982 and replaced Snowy White with Thin Lizzy ; he was in turn replaced by Fred Purser. In the same year the band released their best-selling album The Cage , with which they reached number 13 in the charts and which contained the hit Love Potion # 9 (number 45 in the singles charts), which was still recorded with Sykes . With this album, the band used external songwriters for the first time. However, the group had strayed from their original style with the very commercial album and officially broke up in late 1983 due to management and label problems. A best-of album was released the following year.
From 1983 to 1984 Robb Weir and Brian Dick performed sporadically under the name Tygers of Pan Tang along with Tony Liddle (vocals), Tony Curry (bass) and Steve Lamb (guitar).
In 1985 Deverill and Dick formed a new edition of the Tygers of Pan Tang with guitarists Steve Lamb and Neil Shepherd and Dave Donaldson on bass with the participation of mainstream producer Steve Thompson, but they split again in 1987 after two unsuccessful albums. In the meantime, Weir and Cox tried in 1986 together with bassist Brian Emerson under the name Tyger Tyger to revive the old band. However, the project was short-lived. Only the title Small Town Flirt has been published as the only song of this project (on the album First Kill ).
After the group had not heard any signs of life for years after 1987, founding member Jess Cox received an offer in 1999 for the Tygers to perform at Wacken Open Air . Since Dick and Laws were not available, Cox and Weir were the remaining founding members of three musicians of the British heavy metal group Blitzkrieg - u. a. later band member Gavin Gray - assisted in the open air performance and the warm-up gigs . In addition to their earlier hit Love Potion # 9, the program for the Wacken Open Air only included songs from the band's founding line-up.
After Robb Weir came up with the idea of reviving the Tygers, he implemented the idea in 2001. In addition to Robb Weir, the group included singer Tony Liddle (previously bassist and singer with Angel Witch ), bassist Brian West, drummer Craig Ellis and guitarist Dean Robertson. In the same year singer Liddle was replaced by Richie Weeks after only one album and two appearances. After further line-up changes, the band is still active with the singer Jacopo Meille, who joined them in 2004, and the new bassist Gavin Gray and the new guitarist Micky Crystal.
Over time, various albums with previously unreleased recordings by the original band were released.
The band made a few appearances in Germany in 2014. Some appearances in Germany are also planned for 2017.
