Black Messiah is a pagan metal band that was founded in Gelsenkirchen in 1992 and began as a “pure old-school black metal band”.

history

Black Messiah at the 2016 Dark Troll Festival

At the beginning Black Messiah played Black Metal, which was influenced by bands like Bathory , Celtic Frost , Possessed or Venom . In 1995 the band played their first demo tape Southside Golgotha .

In 1996, Corpus Christi and, after a dispute, Reverend Heidenbluth got out. Zagan, who had a classical music education, composed some new pieces with classical and folkloristic influences, whereby the band developed in the direction of Pagan Metal .

With drummer Nabahm from Innana Unveiled and Goat of Mendes as well as numerous guest musicians such as the former Sodom and Kreator guitarist Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik , Zagan recorded the first album Scepter of Black Knowledge , which was released in 1998 on the Last Episode record label . In addition to older pieces with old-school influences such as Scepter of Black Knowledge , Pagan Winter and Diabolic Rites , the album contains newer songs such as Old Gods , Crusade of the Blackened or Queen of Darkness .

In mid-1999, a few days before the recording of the second disc, there was a dispute between Black Messiah and the label, which "did not keep some important agreements", which led to the termination of the contract by Zagan. In the summer of 2000, Black Messiah rented a studio and recorded a 3-track demo that was never released. The titles contained on it were later released on the album Oath of a Warrior ; My Way to Asgaard is based on Black Metal, while Christenfeind and Blutsbruder reflect a development of the style on the first album.

In 2001, Zagan and Nabahm separated, who wanted to keep Black Messiah as a pure studio project, while Zagan also wanted to play on stages. Subsequently, the search for a new line-up for the band began, which was in August 2002.

In 2005 the band signed productions with the label Einheit , released the album Oath of a Warrior via Soulfood and played at several concerts, festivals and a European tour with Cruachan . In October they parted ways with bassist Drahco, who was replaced by Niörd.

In 2006 Black Messiah released the album Of Myths and Legends, recorded at SSE Studio in Essen . That year, Niörd had to "leave the band for professional reasons," and Rolling Stone magazine published the article Hitler's Headbanger , which portrayed Black Messiah as a right-wing extremist band; however, the band regularly distances itself from any kind of right-wing extremism.

“We were allergic to the article. Anyone who knows us knows what we think of Nazis. I don't feel like being compared to these brain-amputated idiots. They are criminals. "

- Zagan in an interview with the online music magazine The-Pit.de

That same year, Black Messiah signed with AFM Records . Surthur had to leave the band "due to illness", keyboarder Hrym got out as well. These were replaced at the end of 2006 by Agnar on keyboard and Brööh on drums. With this line-up, the band gave appearances in clubs, at festivals such as Summer Breeze and the Ragnarök Festival, and on a European tour. She also worked on new material that was recorded in 2008; the release of the fourth album First War of the World , a " concept album about the Edda -based story of the war of the Aesir against the Vanen, " was announced for March 20th in early February 2009. The band then continued the style changes announced by Of Myths and Legends , using more clean vocals than on any previous album.

In November 2009 Zoran left the band. He was replaced by lead guitarist Frangus. In April 2012, Meldric left the band for personal reasons. In December 2014 Frangus left the band for personal reasons and was replaced by Donar. For family reasons, Brööh also had to quit work at the beginning of 2015 and was replaced by Surtr.
