Darkness is a German thrash metal band from Essen , North Rhine-Westphalia , which was founded in 1984 and disbanded in 1991. In 2004 the band was reunited under the name Eure Erben and is now active again as Darkness.

history

The band was formed in December 1984 after a concert by Destruction and Tormentor (later Kreator ). The group consisted of drummer and singer Andreas “Lacky” / “Torturer” Lakaw, bassist Hartmut “Agony” Schöner and guitarist Andreas “Skull” Becker. The members went to the Zeche Carl and founded the band there and wrote the first song Armageddon there . A short time later, Uwe "Damager" Christopfers joined the band as the second guitarist. With this line-up, the band recorded their first demo, The Evil Curse . Shortly afterwards, Christopfers left the band again. The three of them did the next demo recording called Titanic War . Then singer Oliver "Olli" / "Zeutan" Fernickel joined the cast. After that, the band briefly disintegrated. Guitarist Pierre Danielscyk and bassist Bruno joined as new members and recorded the third demo, Spawn of the Dark One . Shortly afterwards Arnd Klink joined the band as the second guitarist.

In 1987 the band released their debut album Death Squad on Tales of Thrash Records . In 1988 the second album Defenders of Justice followed on Scratch Records as a CD and on Tales of Thrash Records as an LP . The album was re-released in 1992 on Polyband under the name Broken Heart and in 2005 under the name Bloodbath on Battle Cry Records . 1989 followed the last album Conclusion & Revival , which was released on Hot Blood Records before the band broke up. In 2004 members of the band got together again and founded your heirs. The band plays songs from Darkness, mostly in German, as well as new compositions. In 2005 the three albums Death Squad , Defenders of Justice and Conclusion & Revival were re-released. In addition, the live album Bocholt Live Squad was released , which contains a concert recording from May 17, 1987. The 2008 compilation The Demos also includes a live recording of Keep It True from 2006.

style

The band's debut, Death Squad , is typical of old German Thrash Metal. They weren't one of the noisiest bands of their time, but played "very fast, yet understandable Thrash with a few hints of originality and pretty memorable riffs ". Darkness' style wasn't fully developed though, with some pieces "sounding pretty generic". While their second album Defenders of Justice had a style of their own, Conclusion & Revival sounded "more ordinary and less inspired" than their previous works.
