Torfrock is a German rock band that was founded in 1977 by Klaus Büchner and Raymond Voss .

Some of the musicians have known each other since the mid-1970s. Before Torfrock, Klaus Büchner and Raymond Voss, together with other musicians, founded the folk band Basia, which worked and performed in Hamburg's Ernst-Deutsch-Theater . With this band they set the works of English-speaking poets, including Robert Frost , Robert Louis Stevenson and William Shakespeare , which could be used without rights.

At a party in Schleswig , Büchner wanted to play the song Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix with other musicians . Since he said he was drunk and had therefore forgotten the lyrics of the song, Büchner improvised the lyrics in Low German . He then presented the idea to Voss, who was enthusiastic. Because of the concern that the audience might not appreciate the North German humor, they only incorporated Low German songs into their performances on a trial basis as part of a "slapstick corner", which they gradually expanded, as the Low German songs surprisingly turned out to be a success with the audience. They included other Low German songs such as Karola Petersen (based on the template Oh, Carol from the Rolling Stones ) in their program. The plan developed to found a band dedicated to regional humor. Part of the concept were everyday stories that were often placed in the fictional, stereotypical north German village of Torfmoorholm or in the Viking metropolis Haithabu . A "small cosmos of peat bog" was created, Voss later said. The line-up of the band at that time consisted of Klaus Büchner and Raymond Voss, Thomas Rieckmann (lyricist, bass, vocals), Reinhard Heinrichs (lyricist, percussion and vocals) and Gunnar Kämmer (percussion and drums). The band first became known in northern Germany, which was addressed by it. The first phase of Torfrock ended with the appearance of the Neue Deutsche Welle . Since the Torfrock songs, according to Voss, were “long and opulent” and told history, and therefore would not have matched the often short texts of the Neue Deutsche Welle, according to Voss the decision was made to avoid being “written down” by critics: “We listen just open up and don't tell anyone. And just take a break. "

Then the musicians turned to new band projects. The band Hammaburg mostly consisted of the same members and the style was also very similar to the music of peat rock. In 1982, Raymond Voss and Gunnar Kämmer founded the band Eltern sindhaft für den Kinder , a band dedicated to more serious issues. Klaus Büchner had the greatest success in the 1980s and 1990s as Kleiner Klaus together with Klaus Baumgart in the Schlager and Blödel duo Klaus and Klaus . Raymond Voss occasionally took part in the writing; many of these songs were later reused by Torfrock. Klaus Büchner and Raymond Voss also recorded singles under their own names.

At the end of the 1980s, Torfrock got together again. In 1988, following an appointment with a Hamburg radio station, the presenter asked Voss whether he could imagine giving a farewell concert with peat rock six years after the group had ended. The sold out concert in the Hamburg market hall was again the new beginning of the band, said Voss looking back in 2017. After successful individual appearances and the nationwide breakthrough by Beinhart , the title song of the first Werner comic film adaptation, the band decided to release new music again and go on tour. In addition to smaller tours spread over the whole year, Torfrock gave concerts every Christmas in various northern German cities with the name Die Beinharte Bagalutenwiehnacht .

Uwe Meitzner stepped in for bassist Thomas Rieckmann, who died in 1989. At Voss's request to turn Torfrock into a rock band, solo guitarist Jürgen Lugge joined the band from now on. Additional music projects ran in parallel. Together with members of the Rattles , a maxi was published under the name Hellhunde . Raymond Voss sang for Jay Stapley, the guitarist of Marius Müller-Westernhagen , on the single Orient Express . Büchner's Klaus and Klaus project also lasted until 1997, when Büchner decided to leave the duo in order to be able to devote himself better to Torfrock. Later there were conflicts and a reshuffle, as well as the unexpected death of Jürgen Lugge in 1999.

Since Jürgen Lugge was considered irreplaceable, the band consisted of four members after this crisis. In addition to Klaus Büchner and Raymond Voss, bassist Volker Schmidt and drummer Marc-Oliver Olliwood Steinwede were there. He has been replaced since 2009/10 by Stefan Lehmann, drummer of the band Ohrfeindt , who have been on tour with Torfrock for three years.

Musical style

Influences

At the beginning of the story of Torfrock there was the idea of interpreting rock classics in Low German, such as Let's wörk togesser ( Let's Work Together , Wilbert Harrison ), Karola Petersen ( Carol , Chuck Berry ) or He Jo ( Hey Joe , including Jimi Hendrix , The Leaves ).

But already on the first album there were humorous songs of their own, which are performed in High German or Missingsch .

Peat Bog Holm

Some of the peat rock songs are set in the present and deal with the rural life of the peat cutters in the fictional village of Torfmoorholm ("Rut mit'n Torf"). It is about figures like "Willi Wühlkelle", director of the Office for Antiquities Research, "Jackhammer BBBB-Bernhard", the peat cutter "Adular Zech", the rather monotonous job "Jörg vom Butterwerk", the road construction worker "Tarzan von Teer" or the excavator operator "Hannes Kabeltod" in songs that satirize the modern commercial world of work on construction sites, in factories or similar - which the musicians are not unfamiliar with. The satirical appraisals of the excesses of the leisure society (“The Sunday hunters”, “The boxer (please don't hit my lip anymore)”, “The butter trip”) are also famous .

Haithabu

On the other hand, they spin popular historical stories about the Viking settlement “ Haithabu ”, an archaeological site in Schleswig-Holstein . The central figure in these stories is Rollo the Vikings , a hard-drinking, rough-faced, red-haired Viking chief who is said to have played a leading role in the “crossing to America”. According to the group, the fictional source of the Viking songs is a rune stone in Torfmoorholm. The song “Volle Granate, Renate” about a Viking woman of the same name achieved cult status, especially in northern Germany.

In the figure of Rollo the Viking, the historical figure of the Norman prince " Rollo the Vikings " and the American comic figure Hägar the Terrible have been mixed up.

Opening act

Especially during the Bagaluten Wiehnacht, but also at open-air festivals or city festivals, the band appears together with several supporting groups, which have toured with them for around two to three years. At the beginning of the 1990s, there were appearances with the Fuckin 'Kius Band (which later renamed itself the F ... Kius Band and was mainly known in the area of its origin, the village of Kius in northern Schleswig-Holstein). Later, a British band, the Whiskey Priests, was taken into the support program, one of which also temporarily stepped in when the line-up change from Torfrock. Sven Hallik, singer of the next supporting act LouiZiana Hayriders , who are known for a mixture of rockabilly, blues rock, country and southern rock, is still a welcome guest on the peat rock stage with his guitar. Besides the urge Düwels , bring the Low German to folk sounds texts on the stage, is currently still Ohrenfeindt served as the opening act at Torfrock. Recently, the Wohnraumhelden , Die Fischer , Rubber Chukks and the Rockaholic Rebels have also been part of the support groups Torfrocks.

It is a tradition at Torfrock, before the closing song (formerly Torfmoorholm Says Gute Nacht , now (Leise Pieselt) Das Reh or Torfmoorholm Geht Penn ' ), to perform the piece Let's Wörk Togesser together with all support group musicians .

Actions

At the beginning of the 1990s, after the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen , Torfrock set an example against xenophobia in interviews and in an action by the Hamburger Morgenpost . The band supports the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People through the sale of band calendars and the Single Search And Rescue ( SAR ), the text of which pays tribute to the hard and dangerous work of the sea rescue service.
