Eaten by Sheiks was an independent rock band from Hamburg . The band was founded in 1995 in Göttingen and dissolved in 2010.

history

In 1995, when it was founded, Eaten by Sheiks undertook its first three-week tour through Germany and the Czech Republic . The following year the group came into contact with the producer and sound engineer Willi Dammeier (Institute for Sound Research, Hanover), who recorded and produced the band's debut album, the vinyl LP In my Head ; the beginning of years of cooperation. In 1999, the record label WEA Records expressed interest and offered the band an advance payment, linked to the request for catchy song material. After a concert in the Hamburg slaughterhouse, however, the offer was withdrawn by the label's A&R department.

In 2000 the band moved from Göttingen to Hamburg and undertook an extensive tour of Germany in the same year. This was followed by a collaboration with the Moertec production team and the Horus studio. At this time, however, Eaten by Sheiks threatened to break up due to artistic conflicts and creative exhaustion. A turning point occurred with the establishment of the record label Ragaprong Records , on which the album Come Away was released in 2002 . In 2003 the band played in the opening act on the tour of the group Wir sind Helden and also received the hamburgdesignpreis award for designing the band's website.

In 2004 Eaten by Sheiks signed a contract with the music company SPV , which took over the distribution of Our last first Record , the group's fifth album, the following year . The production and publication of the music video I like it and another tour of Germany followed. Between 2006 and 2007 the band recorded the next album entitled Bold , which was produced by Gregor Hennig and Eaten by Sheiks and released in 2008. (In 2007 guitarist Jürgen Ufer left the group in favor of his own band called Kleine Sister .) This was followed by a Germany-wide club tour and a support tour for the band Madsen through Germany and Austria. In 2010 the current members of the band decided to break up Eaten by Sheiks in order to devote themselves to other projects.

style

Ever since the band was founded, Eaten by Sheiks has been characterized by stylistic diversity. The musical styles on their individual releases varied greatly: While the music on the debut album In My Head was still influenced by alternative rock in the style of the bands Motorpsycho and dEUS , the follow-up album Traxdata Vol. 1 was followed by a musical collage of experimental rehearsal room recordings - recorded with a radio recorder and partly with the participation of DJs - which were subsequently digitally edited and alienated.

After two poppy-electronically oriented CDs, Monsterwomanwife and Monsterwomanmusic , as well as another album with mostly spherical sounds and whispering vocals (Come Away) , Eaten by Sheiks returned to more rocky sounds in 2004 with the album Our Last First Record . The album Bold , which was released in spring 2008 after long-time guitarist Jürgen Ufer left and produced by Eaten by Sheiks and Gregor Hennig, marks another significant change in the band in several ways: The album was composed and pre-produced on the computer, with polyphonic ones Choir arrangements are used, and compared to the previous albums, the sound and production appear rougher and more complex.

At their live concerts, the band attracted attention, among other things, because of the visual contrast between a singer who performed with static motor skills and the instrumentalists who were increasingly sporty on stage during the concert.
