The Cwmbran Town Athletic Football Club (short: Cwmbran Town) is a football club from Cwmbran ( Wales ). The club was founded in 1951 and plays in the Gwent County League Division One , the fifth highest division in Welsh football.

history

Cwmbran Town initially played in the Monmouthshire Senior League. The game was played in Cwmbran Park. In 1960 the club joined the Welsh Football League and in 1975 moved to the Cwmbran Stadium, where the club still plays today. In 1978 the club got down and took three years to get up again. In 1987 Cwmbran was runner-up, three years later they only narrowly failed in the championship.

Cwmbran became a founding member of the League of Wales in 1992 and became its first champion. The championship brought the club to Europe. In qualifying for the European Champions Cup , Cwmbran met Cork City from Ireland . The home game was only won 3-2 after a 3-0 lead. In Ireland, Cwmbran lost 2-1 and was eliminated due to the away goals.

Cwmbran reached the Welsh Cup final three times, but went off the pitch as a loser each time. In 1997 and 2003 the winner was Barry Town , while in 2000 Bangor City received the trophy. In 1998, 1999 and 2004 Cwmbran qualified again for the European Cup. Each time it was the end of the line in the first lap. The opponents were FC Național Bucharest , Celtic Glasgow and Maccabi Haifa .

In the 2005/06 season, Cwmbran fought for a long time against relegation and should actually have been relegated as the penultimate. Since only a second division wanted to move up, Cwmbran remained in the League of Wales. Although things are going better this season, the club is struggling with financial problems. At the end of November 2006, the first reports of outstanding player salaries surfaced. After an initial denial , the club admitted at the end of the month that it could no longer pay the players. Many top performers then left the club. To strengthen the team, manager Sean Wharton returned to the field.

Cwmbran Town took part in a total of six European competitions, most recently in the 2003/04 season in the UEFA Cup. The overall balance: 12 games, 1 win, 11 defeats, 6:39 goals.

Stadion

Cwmbran plays its home games at the Cwmbran Stadium . The stadium has a capacity of 10,500 seats, 2,000 of which are covered. The Cwmbran Stadium is considered to be the best and most comfortable stadium in the League of Wales. Nevertheless, the average audience is surprisingly low at 163.
