P. Bhaskaran ( Pulloottupadathu Bhaskaran Nair ; Malayalam പി. ഭാസ്കരൻ ; born April 24, 1924 in Kodangullur near Thrissur , Kerala ; † February 25, 2007 in Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala) was an Indian songwriter , director and actor. As a prominent figure in a regional language cinema production, he shot his films exclusively in Malayalam. In this language he also wrote several thousand song texts for a variety of feature films.

Live and act

The son of a well-known journalist and lawyer who campaigned for Indian independence, grew up in what is now the southern Indian state of Kerala. He attended Maharajas College in Ernakulam and published poetry in a local magazine early on. For his participation in the so-called August battles against the British colonial power, he was sentenced to nine months in prison in 1942. He then worked as a journalist for various newspapers and radio stations, including in Chennai and Kozhikode . During this time he also began to write song texts for communist agitators. During the Punnapra-Vayalar Rebellion (1946), he wrote a song called Vayalar Garjikkunnu , the first lines of which, Uyarum Njan Nadake ... quickly became extremely popular. The ruler ( Diwan ) of the Princely State of Travancore , which still existed at that time , then obtained the expulsion of P. Bhaskaran; the song - like others from his pen - was banned.

Bhaskaran's first contribution to a film song was made in 1949 for a Tamil production , he contributed a few lines in Malayalam to a multilingual song. But just one year later, in 1950, he wrote the first complete texts for the film Chandrika . In 1954 he directed the neorealistic film Neelakkuyil with Ramu Kariat , which received the first National Film Award ( President's Silver Medal ) for a Malayalam film. The songs that P. Bhaskaran created for this film are very well known to this day.

By 1989 P. Bhaskaran directed over 50 feature films. He was also occasionally active in the documentary genre, e.g. B. with a portrait of the South Indian poet Vallathol . Most of his 3000 song lyrics, which are characterized by simple beauty and some of which are reminiscent of the traditional Ghazeln , were based on compositions by K. Raghavan and Mohammad Sabir Baburaj . With his songs he enabled some of today's renowned singers, e. B. KJ Yesudas , her career.

In some productions he also appeared as an actor, including in Neelakkuyil . He was particularly successful with the film Manoradham (1978), in which he played a strict family man with an affinity for astrology.

P. Bhaskaran died of heart failure on February 25, 2007; he left a wife and four children.

In addition to Neelakkuyil , Bhaskaran's films Adyakiranangal (1964), Irruttinde Athmavu (1969) and Thurakkatha Vathil (1971) also won National Film Awards in various categories. His volume of poetry Ottakkampiyulla Thamburu earned him the award of the Kerala Sahithya Akademi in 1982 . In 1994 the Kerala government honored him with the JC Daniel Award for his life's work .
