James Strachey

James Beaumont "Jembeau" Strachey (born September 26, 1887 in London , † April 25, 1967 in High Wycombe ) was a British psychoanalyst . He was the younger brother of Lytton Strachey and is best known for the translation of Sigmund Freud's complete works into English (for which he was awarded the Schlegel-Tieck Prize in 1967).

Strachey was the youngest of ten children. He studied medicine at Cambridge , where he also became friends with Rupert Brooke .

In 1920 Strachey married Alix Sargant Florence (1892-1973). James Strachey went to Sigmund Freud for analysis, while Alix was analyzed by Karl Abraham in Berlin.

One of James' later training analysts in England was the pediatrician Donald W. Winnicott . He was friends with John Maynard Keynes .
