On the run

On the Hunt is an American action thriller from 1998 starring Tommy Lee Jones and Wesley Snipes . It is a follow-up to the hit movie On the Run , in which Harrison Ford is hunted by Tommy Lee Jones.

action

Mark Roberts is charged with the murder of two Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agents . Although his fingerprints are said to have been found at the scene, he claims that he did not commit the crime. During a prisoner transport by plane from Chicago to New York, another prisoner takes a gun hidden in the toilet and uses it to attack Roberts. Roberts fends off the attack, but the shot tears a large hole in the ship's side and, in addition to the attacker and a police officer, also pulls out objects that get caught in two engines, whereupon they fail. The aircraft has to make an emergency landing on a road and slips into a lake. US Marshal Samuel Gerard, who traveled with him, saves some prisoners from the sinking machine, and Roberts uses the mess to escape. While he tries to prove his innocence, Gerard chases him down with his team. However, he doubts about Roberts' guilt when he learns that his real name is Sheridan and was a DSS and CIA employee. When DSS agent John Royce is put to the side of the top marshals, who behaves suspiciously in the search for Roberts, Gerard becomes more and more suspicious. Little by little he uncovered a plot in which Sheridan alias Roberts seems to be the tragic pawn sacrifice .

John Royce was transferred to the investigative team for a reason. He had previously arranged everything so that Sheridan appears as the culprit when the transfer of secret papers to the People's Republic of China was discovered and the two agents were shot. Eventually Sheridan is tracked down and flees to a retirement home, where he is placed by Royce. Gerard's employee Noah Newman appears and witnesses how Royce wants to execute Sheridan, whereupon he in turn is shot by Royce. While Sheridan is running away, Royce blames him for Newman's murder. Gerard finds out that Sheridan is believed to be fleeing to Canada aboard a freighter. Together with Royce he searches the freighter and is able to arrest Sheridan after a fight in the hold after Royce shot him, obviously with killing intent. Sheridan is admitted to a hospital and guarded by Gerard and Royce. Gerard secretly swaps Royce's full magazine for an empty one and goes to get coffee for both of them. Royce sends another police officer away and is now trying to get his former colleague out of the way for good. Then Gerard enters the sickroom and confronts Royce. He wants to shoot Gerard, but no shot goes off his gun. When he draws a hidden second pistol, Gerard beats him and hits him fatally. Sheridan is exonerated and released.

background

Locations

On the Hunt was filmed at numerous locations in and around Chicago , where the film was also shot on the run . Additional locations were in New York City and the Tennessee swamps .

emergency landing

For the emergency landing at the beginning of the film, a Boeing 727 was rented from a casino owner from Las Vegas , and two other fuselages were used for the scenes at the scene of the accident. The crash scene during the failed emergency landing was filmed with a model. The team built a 360 m long section of concrete road and let the model airplane slide over it at around 100 km / h. The scene was recorded by seven cameras simultaneously. A fuselage was placed on a metal frame in the river. In this way the hull could be raised and lowered in the water according to the script instructions. The interior views of the crashed and sinking aircraft were made in a warehouse in southwest Chicago. The second fuselage was equipped with a mechanism to simulate the crash. Special camera tripods made it possible to take pictures during the panic that broke out in the violently moving torso.

Reviews

"Warner sends the Deserved Man in Black Tommy Lee Jones out hunting again as US Marshal. Director Stuart Baird (' Lonely Decision ') and screenwriter John Pogue follow the successful formula of ' On the Run '. They deliver a remake with more technological gadgets and less human touch. The action sequences are staged effectively as usual. "

“A technically solidly staged action thriller that sees itself as a continuation of the film 'Auf der Flucht' (1993). In place of the interesting juxtaposition of hunter and hunted there is a routine product that largely focuses on mere visual values, which fails mainly due to the lack of profile of the main characters. Actually, the film therefore hardly offers a challenge. "

“The quasi-continuation is flatter than the original, but gets your pulse racing with heated action, and Tommy Lee Jones is just wonderfully grumpy. Conclusion: Not exactly subtle, but intense. "

“It's not a great movie, but it's a quick one; like a sports broadcast with better texts. And Gerard is just adorable as a disgust package. Hopefully something will happen to him again soon. "

- star

“After his directorial debut 'Einsameteilung', the former head-editor Stuart Baird has now succeeded in creating a worthy sequel to the brilliant actioner 'Auf der Flucht'. Thanks to high-speed chases and spectacular stunts, this variant of the Dr. Kimble material also ensures maximum tension. Tommy Lee Jones, who received an Oscar five years ago for portraying the law enforcement officer, once again plays the role of the relentless hunter brilliantly. Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr. complete the star cast. "
