action

The story takes place on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia in the 1940s. Young Margaret MacNeill fears her community's coal mines, where fatal accidents seem to be the order of the day. She has already lost her father and older brother there, so she prefers not to marry a miner. That's how she thinks until she meets the charming Neil Currie. Contrary to the wishes of their dogged mother, the two marry. Before the couple got into financial trouble, Neil finally took the job that every uneducated man in the area gets. He had to work underground and tragically had an accident a few days later. Margaret is done with her nerves and breaks down. But in her surreal world she decides to create a special museum in memory of those who lost their lives in the cursed mine.
