The Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule (GSG) in Göttingen was named after the siblings Hans (1918–1943) and Sophie Scholl (1921–1943). Both were members of the White Rose resistance group , which was founded in Munich in 1942. The GSG is a comprehensive school that offers a wide range of opportunities for integrating and promoting every student.

history

The Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule was founded in 1975 as KGS Göttingen-West. At that time, teachers of all teaching posts set themselves the goal of developing a new all-day school from an already existing secondary and secondary school. The Göttingen school landscape was expanded to include a “classic” cooperative comprehensive school (KGS), which set itself the task of combining new learning content and pedagogical innovations. The main principle of the school then as now was to approach children and young people and empower them. Not the faults of the individual character should be looked for, but their strengths should be found and promoted.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the school structure and the educational concept were changed, the foundations were created for creating a “house of learning” in which children and young people can experience in many ways - with their heads, hearts and minds Hand - to make. In 1993 the KGS Göttingen-West was renamed the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule. The name is intended to be a living guide and communicates important information about the democratic spirit of the school. If there is an occasion, the “Geschwister-Scholl-Prize for civil courage ” is awarded to a pupil .

After a gymnasium upper level was established in the school year 1994, all degrees of general education can be acquired at the school.

Structure and organization

Pupils can be registered in the GSG after attending primary school. There are opportunities for pupils and parents to get to know the school every year at the “Open House”. In grades 5 and 6 there is essentially no external differentiation of subject-specific performance , but individualized lessons in class, that is, an attempt is made to promote students in a targeted manner according to their learning requirements and their current level of knowledge. 6th year students can start learning a second foreign language.

In grades 7 and 8, specialist courses for Hauptschule (H), Realschule (R) and Gymnasium (G) in the subjects of German, English and mathematics are set up. Outside of this differentiation, it is appreciated that since the 5th grade growing class sizes are maintained. In addition, the organization of the school offers the possibility of changing within the specialist courses at any time - this ensures a high degree of permeability.

In grades 9 and 10, school branch classes are set up, some of which have cross-school classes. Particularly gifted pupils are jointly prepared through targeted support measures (“fast lane”) for an individual skip from class 10 to class 11, so that they can receive the Abitur after 12 school years.

Independent learning

“Independent learning” (EL) takes place from grades 5 to 8. One hour EL is provided per weekday. In EL lessons, the students are able to work independently and independently on their tasks. In the 5th and 6th grade, the students work on tasks from the various subjects and enter them in a weekly plan booklet. In years 7 and 8, tasks for two- to four-week themed work are set. They also serve to deepen and expand learning techniques (lectures, presentations, etc.).

The work results are checked by subject teachers and the students themselves take control of the work results. The presentations of the work results and thematic work take place in the group, in the class, at annual meetings or on other occasions, e.g. B. Exhibitions, as well as at the “Open House” etc. Every six months, FL reports on work behavior and learning outcomes in free learning are created and added to the certificate as an attachment.

Integration classes

In the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule, pupils with special educational needs have been taught integratively since 1994 . It is part of the self-image of the school to design lessons in such a way that all students, regardless of their learning requirements, are optimally supported. In order to meet this objective in the classes with expanded heterogeneity (integration classes) for students with special learning difficulties, the teaching content of special school teachers must be didactically and methodically prepared in such a way that it is possible to work on the same teaching topic and to make progress in learning.

Special teaching and learning opportunities

Reading and Learning Olympics

For a successful school career and the subsequent coping with life in training and work, reading is of fundamental importance and requires special school support. The GSG is a particularly reader-friendly school. In addition to newspaper and ballad projects, the Reading and Learning Olympiad is a key element in promoting reading. In accordance with the principles "You learn to read by reading" and "Those who can read quickly and correctly learns more successfully", years 5 and 6 are encouraged to read in a special way. All pupils in these years read a certain number of pages per week from books they have selected. All reading activities are recorded in a reading pass. There are certificates and rewards for special achievements and individual improvements in reading performance.

Wind classes

For some years now, the GSG has given particularly interested students the opportunity to join a special profile class and learn to play a wind instrument or improve there. These wind classes have opportunities both within and outside the school to demonstrate their skills.

European class

The European class is a special offer for 5th and 6th year students. Together, this class approaches European languages, but also historical and political issues. Every year the class organizes a European festival and presents a lively excerpt from their occupation with other cultures and languages. "The focus class Europe and its languages - intercultural learning can be a small building block to improve the quality of communication among Europeans with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds" .

Profile classes

  • The researcher class (Forte) is a special profile class that focuses heavily on experimental discovery learning.
  • The Children in Motion (KiB) class is a special profile class in which a wide variety of sporting activities are in the foreground. In addition, it is made clear to the students that sport is more than just movement - questions about a healthy lifestyle are discussed.

Student companies

At the GSG, interested parties have the opportunity to take part in the work of school-internal student companies. In this way it becomes possible for students to understand economic relationships and considerations through their own direct experience.

School partnerships and other collaborations

Since the 1997/98 school year the Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule has been participating in the Environmental School in Europe program. It was recognized as an environmental school in Europe in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. In addition, the school bears the title School without Racism - School with Courage , as well as " Moving School ". In addition to local cooperation with other educational institutions, the GSG also maintains school partnerships with schools abroad, e.g. B. in France and Hungary.
