Life
Greenwald grew up in New York as the son of a psychologist. After attending the High School of Performing Arts , he became active in the New York theater scene, directing two plays in 1975 and 1976.
He then moved to Los Angeles , where he began a successful career as a television director and producer. In 1977 he was awarded an Emmy for the producer of Die 21 Stunden von München , a television film about the hostage-taking of Munich . He received his next Emmy nomination in 1984 for a film adaptation of The Burning Bed , based on a true case of domestic violence . He produced a number of television films until the 1990s, which the New York Times later referred to as " commercially respectable B-list movies ".
In 1980 he ventured into the cinema with the musical film Xanadu . The film, which Greenwald produced and directed, flopped at the box office and received poor reviews. It was not until 1997 that he made the love drama Breaking Up again, a movie that was also a financial failure.
His next film produced for the cinema, the biopic Steal This Movie about the activist Abbie Hoffman , received positive reviews and was nominated by the Political Film Society for a PFS Award in two categories .
In the early 2000s he began producing documentaries that deal critically with the George W. Bush administration and the media. He had particular success with Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election , a documentary about the 2000 presidential election and Outfoxed , a film about the media landscape in the United States.
In 2002 Greenwald founded RDV Books , together with Victor and Danny Goldberg, which publishes books on political topics.
In the 2008 presidential election campaign, Greenwald caused a sensation with viral videos that criticize the behavior of the right-wing conservative media.
