James Spader (2013)

James Todd Spader (born February 7, 1960 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American actor from the Brat-Pack scene, who mainly through roles in films like Pretty in Pink and Stargate as well as the series Practice - The Lawyers , Boston Legal and The Blacklist . He had his breakthrough as a character actor in 1989 with sex, lies and video by Steven Soderbergh .

life and work

Childhood and youth

Spader was born in 1960 in Boston to the teaching couple Jean and Todd Spader. He first attended Pike School, where his mother worked as an art teacher, and for a year the Brooks School in North Andover , where his father taught. Spader later moved to Phillips Academy Andover , which he left in eleventh grade to study acting at Michael Chekhov School in New York City . Before he could fully earn his living acting, he worked in a variety of professions, including yoga teacher, waiter, truck driver, stable boy, and railroad car loader.

Career

He had his first major film role in 1981 as Jimmy Spader - on the side of Brooke Shields in the drama Endless Love . The first leading role followed four years later in Tuff Turf - Zoff in LA at the side of his good friend Robert Downey junior . But Spader only had his breakthrough as an actor in 1986 as Steff in Pretty in Pink . In 1987 he shot with Andrew McCarthy , another friend, the film Mannequin and the film adaptation of the bestseller Unter Null , in which he played the drug dealer Rip. Supporting roles in films like Baby Boom and Wall Street followed , before he was able to celebrate his breakthrough with the critics with the leading role in Sex, Lies and Video . For his portrayal of the voyeur Graham, he was named best actor at the Cannes International Film Festival . Spader's roles in the early 1990s included a wealthy young widower alongside Susan Sarandon in Breakfast with Her , John Cusack's best friend in The Price of Power, and a poker-playing hitchhiker in the film adaptation of The Music of Chance .

In 1994 he played one of his most famous roles as the Egyptologist Daniel Jackson in the science fiction film Stargate . He also played a car accident fetishist two years later in the controversial Canadian crash and a killer in the movie thriller 2 days in LA . In 1997 he also appeared as a guest star on an episode of the sitcom Seinfeld . In 2000 he played a drug addict cop on the side of Keanu Reeves in The Watcher . A year later he stood at the side of Maggie Gyllenhaal as her sadomasochistic boss in the production Secretary in front of the camera, which was received positively by the critics .

2003 Spader rose as Alan Shore in the eighth season of the successful US lawyer series Practice - The Lawyers . After the series ended, Spader also took on the leading role of the same name in the spin-off Boston Legal , for which he was awarded three Emmys as best leading actor in a drama series. This makes Spader one of the few actors who has won multiple Emmy Awards for portraying a character in two different series, including his co-actor from The Practice and Boston Legal , William Shatner . For Boston Legal , Spader also received a 2006 Satellite Award for "Best Actor in a Series, Comedy, or Musical".

In October 2006 he acted as spokesman for the documentary China Revealed , which is also the first episode of the Discovery Atlas series on the Discovery Channel . He also served as a voiceover in various commercials for the Acura car brand . From December 2009 to June 2010 he also appeared as Jack Lawson in David Mamet's Broadway play Race . Richard Thomas , David Alan Grier and Kerry Washington also worked on the production at the Ethel Barrymore Theater . In 2009 he had an appearance in the US family film The Secret of the Rainbow Stone . Since September 2013 he has appeared in the NBC drama series The Blacklist as Raymond "Red" Reddington, one of the most wanted felons in the world.

James Spader's German dubbing voice is usually Benjamin Völz . In the German dubbed version of The Practice , however, he is spoken by Nicolas Böll and in the film Lincoln by Olaf Reichmann .

Private life

Spader was married from 1987 to 2004 to Victoria Kheel, whom he met in the 1980s as a helper in a New York yoga studio. He has two sons with her. He currently lives with his colleague Leslie Stefanson , with whom he has had a child since August 2008.

Since Spader's eyesight is poor and he cannot wear contact lenses, he says it is difficult for him to recognize the faces of the other actors while filming in roles in which he cannot wear his glasses.
