action
Harrison French (Matthew Davis) is on his way home. It is a rainy night and he has just lost the major contract that was supposed to renovate his real estate company and make him financially independent. Suddenly a man stands on the street, Harrison notices him too late and runs over the stranger. When he gets out and looks after him, he is already dead. Harrison drags his body into the ditch and covers it with branches. Then he goes home to his wife Wynn (Robin Tunney) and goes to sleep. The next morning he heard on the radio that a bank had been robbed and that the perpetrators were on the run. His thought quickly falls on Chris Henderson (Andrew Harris), Wynn's drug addict brother. He also fears that the casualty is Chris.
When he drives past the scene of the accident after work and wants to see for himself, he can unfortunately see that the dead man's face is defaced. Seeking help, he turns to William Ashbury (James Spader), a man who has apparently helped all the wealthy in the area out of a difficult situation. He tells William about the accident and William decides to help him. A short time later, Harrison learns that the accident victim is actually Chris, as Wynn was able to identify him from a tattoo. Shortly thereafter, Harrison is suspected by the police because his name tag was found at the scene.
William proposes the following plan to Harrison, which he then implements - Harrison should deposit the stolen money in a locker at the train station. He also hires a homeless person to collect the money from the locker and to disappear with it. He has this event photographed by his middleman. What Harrison doesn't know, however, is that the middleman also photographed him when he left the money in the locker. A prestigious ball takes place the next evening. Harrison is said to be there with Wynn's sister Allison (Lacey Chabert). There he notices, however, that William is talking to his wife and then goes to his room with her. When he arrives at the room, his wife runs towards him crying. He confronts William. However, Harrison explains that he has it in his hand from now on and shows him the lively brother Chris in the next room.
Harrison is now planning a campaign of revenge. He meets Chris and lets him know his plan. The two drive their car to a gas station. Chris goes to the bathroom. When he doesn't reappear, Harrison checks on him. The whole process is observed and photographed by Williams' intermediary. When Harrison comes out of the toilet again without Chris and drives away, the middleman enters the toilet and sees the apparently dead Chris sitting on the toilet with a needle in his hand. He photographs the body and brings the pictures to William, who is in league with the police chief.
But this whole project was part of Harrison's plan, as it now turns out. One rainy night, Harrison contacts the unsuspecting William to meet with him. At the same time, he contacts Detective Scofield (Aiden Quinn), a police officer who has just been transferred from New York and who is already suspecting Harrison and his wife. Harrison lures William to the same place where he ran over the man. He tells him to rummage in Chris's bag, which is on Williams' back seat. Suddenly he found bills and a weapon in it. Now Williams' fingerprints are on the gun that was used in the bank robbery. William shoots Harrison in the leg with it. Shortly thereafter, Detective Scofield appears with Harrison's wife. The supposedly dead Chris also emerges from the woods. Now William sees no way out but to shoot Detective Scofield so that everything can be attached to Harrison. But Scofield shoots first and kills William. Now all who suffered from William's machinations are redeemed. The film ends when Harrison and Wynn drive away from their house in a new car that is available for sale.
criticism
The lexicon of international films classifies Shadow of Fear as a “chatty thriller” with an “over-constructed story” that only pretends to “look behind the facade of bourgeois decency”.
Kino.de describes the film as a low-budget thriller in which many B-stars appear and there are no major action segments. However, it is "not unoriginally constructed" and a "solid pastime for thriller viewers".
Christoph Petersen, critic of the Filmstarts .de editorial team, gives the film three out of five stars and draws a positive conclusion overall. Despite minor deficits in the suspense base, Shadow of Fear is an “absolutely worth seeing-evil little genre film”, which deals with the topic that is already frequently taken up in a more “playful” way than big Hollywood productions and can therefore “gain new facets”.
