The fifth presentation of the Independent Spirit Awards took place in 1990.

Summary

The big winner was Steven Soderbergh's Sex, Lies and Video (Sex, Lies, and Videotape) , which was declared the best film and won four other awards. The toughest competitor was Gus Van Sant's drugstore Cowboy , who also received four awards, but was beaten in the categories of "Best Film" and "Best Director". Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train received seven nominations, but did not win a single category. In the “Best Foreign Film” category, Jim Sheridan won with Mein lefter Fuß (My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown) and beat two British colleagues in particular: Terence Davies and Mike Leigh .
