The 18th Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place on March 22, 2003.

Far from Heaven (Far from Heaven) , Todd Haynes ' 50s melodrama, the big winner with five awards was. The triumph of the film ended a long wait for the award not only for Haynes:it was the fourth nomination fordirector and cameraman Edward Lachman andthe thirdfor Julianne Moore . Dennis Quaid won his second award for this film. For other films only side awards and nominations remained: the S / M fantasy Secretary won the award for the best screenplaydebut, the black Jennifer Aniston comedy The Good Girl the award for the best screenplay, Denzel Washington's directorial debut Antwone Fisher the award for best leading actor. Michael Moore was namedbest documentary filmmakerat the Oscars , while Alfonso Cuarón won the award for best foreign filmmaker.
