The 13th Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place on March 21, 1998.

Summary

The clear winner in the films was Robert Duvall's religious satire Apostle! (The Apostle) , which won three awards, one each for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The latter two went to Duvall himself. Well-known competitors of Duvall were Kevin Smith's comedy Chasing Amy , which won two awards, and Paul Thomas Anderson's first feature film Last Exit Reno (Sydney) , which received five nominations but no award. Atom Egoyan won the award for the best foreign film against prominent competition (for the second time Wong Kar-Wai and for the first time Emir Kusturica ).
