The fourth Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place in 1989.

Summary

The clear winner of the award ceremony was Ramón Menéndez 's school drama Stand and Deliver with six awards. Only in the Best Actress ( Jodie Foster in Five Corners (Five Corners) ) and camera ( Sven Nykvist for The Unbearable Lightness of Being (The Unbearable Lightness of Being) ) were able to prevail other films. So used John Waters ' shrill comedy Hairspray six nominations nothing, there was no price. Ramón Menéndez prevailed as the best director against strong competition from the two-time award winner Oliver Stone . Best debut film was Pizza Pizza - A Slice of Heaven (Mystic Pizza) , the then newcomer Julia Roberts was nominated for best leading actress in this film. James Woods was nominated for best actor for the third time, but could not prevail against Edward James Olmos in Stand and Deliver . The best foreign film was a German production, Wim Wenders ' poetic parable Der Himmel über Berlin . He won against German competition: Percy Adlon .
