The seventh Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place in 1992.

Summary

The best film was Martha Coolidge's The Lust of the Beautiful Rose (Rambling Rose) , which received two other awards. The strongest competition was Gus Van Sant's My Private Idaho , who was nominated for six awards and won three. Martha Coolidge won the Best Director Award to Gus Van Sant and the two newcomers Richard Linklater and Todd Haynes , whose films Marauders (Slacker) and Poison were nominated for the best debut film, but did not win. Jane Campion won the prize for the best foreign film for the second year in a row, she again defeated Mike Leigh , but also Krzysztof Kieślowski with The Two Lives of Veronica (La double vie de Véronique) .
