Bill Stafford (born August 13, 1939 in Catskill , New York , † September 19, 2001 in Wayne , Michigan ), was an American baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1960 to 1967 . From 1961 to 1962 Stafford was a successful pitcher for the New York Yankees , an American major league baseball team from the Bronx , New York City . He won 28 combined games in two seasons. From 1960 to 1962 he played 3 times in the World Series for the New York Yankees. In the third game of the World Series in 1962 against the San Francisco Giants , Stafford was the best pitcher. In September 2001, Stafford died of a heart attack in Wayne , Michigan, aged 62.
