Independent Spirit Awards 1993

The eighth Independent Spirit Awards ceremony took place on March 27, 1993.

Summary

Robert Altman's bitter satire on Hollywood , The Player , was nominated for Best Picture, but no other award. Quentin Tarantino's first feature film, Reservoir Dogs, won three nominations, but was defeated in the competition for best director ( Carl Franklin won) and best debut film. Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant received three nominations, but only won lead actor Harvey Keitel . Jim Jarmusch's taxi driver ballad Night on Earth received the camera award, but otherwise no nominations. Neil Jordan , nominated for the second time for the best foreign film, won for The Crying Game and relegated the heavyweights of world cinema like Nikita Sergejewitsch Michalkow and Zhang Yimou to their places.
