Sheila McCarthy (born January 1, 1956 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian actress .

Life and accomplishments

McCarthy made her debut on an episode of the television series Today's Special in 1983. In the same year she appeared in the musical Godspell at the Grand Theater in London , Ontario . It was there that she met the actor Peter Donaldson , whom she married. Both have two daughters, born in 1988 and 1992.

The lead role in the Canadian comedy Song of the Mermaids (1987) by Patricia Rozema earned McCarthy a Genie Award in 1988 . In the same year she was nominated for a Gemini Award for her role in the film A Nest of Singing Birds (1987) . In the film drama Sommerparadies (1991) she starred alongside Melanie Griffith , Don Johnson , Elijah Wood and Thora Birch . For the lead role in the film Paradise with Little Mistakes (1993) she won another Genie Award in 1993. Her role in the television series Emily of New Moon earned her a Gemini Award in 1998 and another nomination for the same award in 1999.

McCarthy and her husband took on major roles in the television adventure film Mama - Voll cool (2000); McCarthy was also involved in the script and production.
