Song of the Mermaids (Original title: I've Heard the Mermaids Singing ) is a feature film by the Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema from 1987 .

action

The focus is on Polly Vandersma, an imaginative, dreamy, somewhat awkward young woman who keeps her head above water with temporary employment . Polly captures her life in photos and films, which the film takes up again and again in a playful way. So Polly tells about her new job in a gallery. She develops more and more admiration for her urbane boss Gabrielle, who is in a close financial and emotional relationship with the artist Mary. The story reaches its fatal climax when Polly intervenes massively in the life of her boss.

background

  • The film ran in Germany partly under the title The Song of the Mermaids .
  • The title refers to a line of the poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by TS Eliot : "I have heard the mermaids singing each to each - I do not think that they will sing to me."

criticism

"A production carried by fine humor and a brilliant leading actress who compensates for her dramaturgical weaknesses with fantasy."

“When watching I've Heard the Mermaids Singing , however, you can't get rid of the uncomfortable feeling that the film, in its playful manner, elegantly cheats its way past the intriguing aspects of the problems it poses. Instead, the director embarks on a visually undoubtedly brilliantly staged retreat into private fantasy realms, which, apart from a few short laughs, triggers little emotionally and intellectually.
