Richard Monette

Richard Jean Monette (born June 19, 1944 in Montreal , Québec , † September 9, 2008 in London , Ontario ) was a Canadian actor and director who was artistic director of the Stratford Festival Theater from 1994 to 2007 . For his services he was awarded the Order of Canada , Canada's highest honor for civilians .

Career

Monette attended high school and college in Montreal, after which he moved to Toronto and got an engagement at the Crest Theater. His first role there was Hamlet . Other smaller roles followed until he was hired in 1965 for the play Soldiers at the Royal Alexandra Theater. With this piece he also appeared on Broadway in May 1968 .

In 1969 he left Canada and moved to London where he appeared in various theater productions until 1974. He returned to Canada and played the title role in Hosanna on Broadway . At the Stratford Company he played Hamlet again. In the 1980s, he made further appearances in the theater, as well as various roles in feature films .

From the late 1980s, Monette focused on working as a director. A few years later he was appointed Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival. Until 2007 he performed all of Shakespeare's plays there as well as various musicals such as My Fair Lady and Anything Goes .
