Iron Sky ( engl. "Iron sky") is a science fiction - Comedy of Finnish director Timo Vuorensola from the year 2012 with Julia Dietze , Christopher Kirby and Götz Otto in the lead roles.

The film was released in cinemas in over 20 countries on April 4, 2012 (in Germany from April 5); the world premiere took place on February 11, 2012 at the Berlinale . Even before its release, Iron Sky had a considerable fan base.

action

In 2018, after almost 50 years, the United States will land again on the moon , which is intended to serve as a PR campaign for the incumbent American president. One of the astronauts searches the surface of the moon with the help of a measuring device for helium-3 and comes across a huge open-cast mine . When he tried to report the find to the control center in Houston by radio , the connection was broken and he was shot by two Wehrmacht soldiers wearing breathing masks . With a Panzerschreck which is lunar module destroyed.

Only James Washington, who accompanies the mission as an African American photo model only for PR purposes, manages to survive. He is captured by the lunar Nazis , descendants of German National Socialists who fled to the moon in 1945, and brought to their lunar base " Black Sun ". There he is to be interrogated because the Nazis are concerned that the moon mission could be part of an imminent invasion of the moon. Washington escapes the interrogation and wanders through the moon station, where he meets Renate Richter, the colony's idealistic teacher. The Washington persecutors are able to seize him again and bring him to Judge's father's laboratory, where Joseph Goebbels tortures him with incessant speeches and injects him with an " albinizer " .

Meanwhile, the Nazis find Washington's smartphone and discover that it has far more processing power than their own outdated computers. Judge's father succeeds in connecting the device to the Götterdämmerung , a gigantic battle ship with which the earth is to be conquered. Shortly afterwards, however, the cell phone's battery drains and it switches itself off.

The leader Kortzfleisch determines that more smartphones should be obtained on earth. The SS -Offizier Klaus Adler, Washington and judges are per Reich flying disc sent to Earth. Adler demands that Washington be brought to the US President. Therefore, the three kidnap Vivian Wagner, the president's campaign manager and person responsible for the failed mission to the moon, and so get to the president. Wagner then modernized the uniforms of Adler and Richter and developed a new election campaign in the style of Nazi propaganda . As a result, the right-wing conservative president can win wide approval from the Americans.

Weeks later, Richter, now a typical New Yorker, happens to meet Washington on the street, who, as a homeless person, tries to warn people with a cardboard sign of the attack by the lunar Nazis. He wants to expose Richter as a participant in the planned invasion, which they get into an argument about, because the indoctrinated Richter believes the Nazis had peaceful intentions. Together they visit the film The Great Dictator , which Richter only knows as a misleading propaganda film for Nazi ideology. She is shocked to discover her mistake. In fact, Kortzfleisch has meanwhile ordered the attack on Earth. In this so-called Meteor - Blitzkrieg Nazi huge set zeppelin-like carrier spaceships, which asteroids as weapons of mass destruction trail behind and draw with devastating effect on the earth, while the attack is supported by Nazi UFOs, which are stationed in the hull of the spacecraft.

In the meantime, Adler has come closer to Wagner and reveals his plans to both conquer the world and kill the moon leader Kortzfleisch. Kortzfleisch surprises Adler here and wants to have him executed for high treason . Wagner, however, anticipates this by shooting Kortzfleisch and Adler having himself proclaimed the new leader. He returns to the moon without Wagner. He wants a tablet computer equipped, the Götterdämmerung activate.

The president is thrilled with the attack on Earth because "all presidents who started a war have been re-elected". Wagner, who wants to take revenge on Adler for the rejection, commands the Mars exploration ship " George W. Bush ", which turns out to be a heavily armed space cruiser. While the ship attacks the invasion fleet, it turns out that all other space nations (except Finland ) have armed their space stations and satellites. Even the Mir space station turns out to be fully functional. Together they can stop the attack and set a course for the moon to wipe out the Nazis.

The Americans attack the moon base with nuclear weapons . Adler ignores this bombardment as his goal is still to attack Earth. In order to be able to shoot them directly with the Götterdämmerung , he shoots away part of the moon. In the meantime, Renate Richter has reached the Götterdämmerung bridge and can kill him. Washington, meanwhile, is sabotaging the spaceship that falls on the moon. Washington and Richter survived the situation and found each other as a couple in the ruins of the moon base.

The nations of the world discover after the end of the battle that the Nazis extracted vast amounts of helium-3, which the Americans immediately claim as their property. The representatives of the nations then begin to quarrel, which escalates into a fight. The "defense of the helium-3 supply against everyone" ordered by the US Secretary of Defense results in the destruction of all spaceships. The dispute spreads into a nuclear world war , shown from space at the end of the film. During the credits, the camera zooms back further and further to Mars , on the back of which a satellite is moving.

In the post-credit scene , you see Prof. Richter tied to the chair that Washington was tied to. Instead of speeches, Goebbels' music of the 21st century is played through the loudspeakers, which makes him scream in pain.

background

The film refers to the myth of the " Reichsflugplatten " allegedly developed by Germany as a miracle weapon during the Second World War, as well as claims that the National Socialists withdrew to a secret military base in New Swabia after the war in order to attempt another attempt at world conquest start. These exaggerated myths - some of which were actually seriously investigated by some pseudoscientists - emerged in the 1940s and 1950s and have persisted in the realm of brown esotericism to this day.

The film also plays heavily with stereotypes relating to American politics , for example with the allegation that presidential candidates would walk over dead bodies in the US election campaign or that a large part of their foreign policy is actually the covert securing of raw materials. The president alludes to former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin . At the same time, international organizations (such as the UN Security Council ) and their negotiations are portrayed as ridiculous and hypocritical.

However, the film does not want to be a serious political satire , but presents the myths about the power of the Nazis as outrageous clichés, which ultimately - especially with regard to the gigantism of Götterdämmerung and its function as a death star - become deliberately absurd. Doctor Richter, who takes on the role cliché of the mad scientist , is optically modeled on Albert Einstein .

The original language of the film is mainly English, but a large part of the Nazi dialogues is in (a not entirely modern) German. Most scenes with Nazis appear with desaturated colors and are reminiscent of nowadays classic films from the late 1930s to 1950s.

The helium-3 energy source exhausted by the Nazis is also given in reality as the reason for possible future lunar programs.

Movie and book quotes

Even before or during the filming, an advertising campaign had been started, in which anyone on the Internet could contribute ideas to the film that were later implemented. As a result, there was only a given basic plot from the start, the details of which were worked out by the fans. This resulted in a wealth of film and book quotes.

The first shot is played with the song Take me to heaven by Laibach, whose instrumentation and vocalizations are based on the sweet US Hawaii songs of the 1940s. The scenario is based on the lunar module's entry into lunar orbit in the 2001 film : A Space Odyssey .

The outburst of anger of the US President's election campaign manager, who puts her glasses on the table with trembling hands and quotes a large part of her advisory staff from the room, so that these employees watch her further screams standing in an adjoining room, is exactly a key scene from the Film based on the downfall . In this one, Adolf Hitler and his staff do the same.

The first appearance of the albinized James Washington in a wheelchair refers to Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strange . The finale, which shows a fight in the UN Security Council and a subsequent nuclear war, also pays homage to Dr. Strange .

The entry of Wagner's spaceship into lunar orbit is reminiscent of the scene from Alien , when the Nostromo enters the orbit of the alien planet.

The last tracking shot, in which all the protagonists are immersed in the sunlight, has a long cinematic tradition and was also used in Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock and has meanwhile become a cliché itself.

production

financing

The total budget of the film was around 7.5 million euros.

The Finnish production companies Blind Spot Pictures and Energia Productions as well as the German co-producer 27 Films Production and the Australian company New Holland Pictures were involved in the production. Among the sponsors were HessenInvestFilm , the German Film Funding Agency and the Finnish Film Foundation , who jointly contributed 600,000 euros.

A share of 900,000 euros was to be organized through crowdfunding via the Startnext platform . Fans who participated in the financing were given an insight into the production. A share could also be bought by fans as profit sharing. As an example of successful crowdfunding, the film received media attention even before its start. It is also unusual that fans on the Internet were able to contribute ideas to the film. The fan base was already involved in Vuorensola's earlier film Star Wreck VI via the Internet.

Filming

The scenes that take place in New York were shot in 2010 in Frankfurt am Main . The Weseler Werft, Taunusstrasse , Neue Mainzer Strasse and an empty office building in Frankfurt served as backdrops . Further shooting took place in Bunker D 20 on the former Opel factory premises in Rüsselsheim as well as in Wiesbaden and Birstein . Green screen recordings with computer-generated backgrounds and effects were shot in Australia . The stage design in Rüsselsheim, Weseler Werft, office buildings in Frankfurt and Taunusstrasse, Neue Mainzer Strasse was built by Joern Pabel and Ekbert Mayer. For the scenes in which the children are taught on the moon base, the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences made one of its old lecture halls in building 8 available.

marketing

Extensive marketing measures were started right at the start of production, which Fritz Effenberger described on Telepolis as "first class" and "contemporary". As early as 2009, before filming began, there were fan articles to be bought. The film team also used the YouTube platform . On October 5, 2011, Blind Spot Pictures released a digital comic book prequel for the film entitled Iron Sky: Bad Moon Rising . A book on the film has also been published.

The Chinese company Ziiso released a game called Iron Sky: The Last Territory for the iPad in 2011 . In it, the player defends the earth with laser weapons against the Nazis attacking from space. However, it was an unlicensed product that Apple removed from the App Store after a complaint . After Ziiso publicly apologized, the company's film team offered to work together.

On April 4, 2012, the Munich-based game developer Reality Twist published the game Iron Sky: The Arcade Shooter for iPad , iPhone , iPod touch and Android devices. In the game, the user fights against various flying objects from the film, such as Reich flying disks and zeppelins, in several levels . The app was available free of charge for the German film release.

Grossing results

In Germany, 128,368 viewers saw the film in 162 cinemas on the premiere weekend. By January 27, 2013, a total of 470,274 viewers saw the film. In the week of the premiere, the film grossed € 96,272 in Austria, € 750,397 in Finland and NOK 1,087,059 (approx. € 135,000) in Norway. The film has grossed $ 8 million at box offices worldwide.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by the Slovenian band Laibach . Mostly pieces by Richard Wagner served as the basis, for example the Ride of the Valkyries and Tristan and Isolde in scenes between Renate Richter and James Washington. In addition, the national anthem of the moon Nazis (“Comrades, we're going home!”) Is a new poem of the song Die Wacht am Rhein .

Reviews

"Nazi clothes, whose satirical potential and political inaccuracies are exhausted in idiotic rubbish."

“So you see at the Berlinale, this strict, ambitious, always politically committed film festival, a film that is very decidedly a work of reckless entertainment and sheer foolishness. Because even if the nonsense machine in Iron Sky runs a little under-speed at times, the director and the actors are in a way that is bold in what is mind-blowing. […] At this film festival, director Timo Vuorensola manages to make even the most obdurate cineastes and the most sober moral preachers laugh - and to inspire even those completely anachronistic people who will never, ever think of to join the species of in this life Wanting to count nerds . "

“Hardly any other film had so many eagerly anticipated as 'Iron Sky'. But the Nazi space clothes are boring, flat and discouraged. [...] And that these space Nazis from the day before yesterday can hold a candle to the Americans from 2018 is annoying nonsense even in the context of the outrageous story of Iron Sky. The attempts in terms of plot do not make the film more bearable. […] But as it is, there is almost nothing good about this film: not the plot, not the gags, not the cast, not the swipes and certainly not the intended breaking of a taboo. The special effects, of all things , from which nobody would have expected Roland Emmerich qualities with a relatively low budget , are impressive. "

- Daniel Erk : The time

"'Iron Sky' is a nerd film of the purest water with a humor potential that seems to be copied directly from imageboards such as 4Chan or Krautchan : Between pubic hair shaving preferences and North Korea bungling, many Nazi uniforms fit, blacks, mad scientists, bleached in the absurd experiment, Retro computer jokes and steampunk mega-dreams. "

- Thomas Groh : Pearl divers

“Fans could also bring in their own ideas for the film. Is it because the film is a bit fragmented in places? Despite all the satire, some successful jokes and convincing special effects (created in Finland), the common thread sometimes falls by the wayside, the film lacks concentration. It also takes a long time for the story to even pick up speed. [...] The result is a visually convincing, worth seeing, but unfortunately not brilliant film, which in places falls short of expectations. "

- Markus Lippold : n-tv

continuation

In 2013, crowdfunding began for the sequel Iron Sky: The Coming Race on Indiegogo . Timo Vuorensola will once again direct the film with producer Tero Kaukomaa.

Computer game based on the film - Iron Sky: Invasion

On November 21, 2012, the official game for the film with the title Iron Sky: Invasion for the PC was released, the versions for game consoles are being planned. The German publisher Topware Interactive has acquired the game license for the film. In terms of content, the game is very similar to the film and is a combination of a space shooter with film scenes, for which many scenes from the cinematic template for the game were re-shot and adapted in the in-house studio in Ettlingen . Members of the original crew such as Julia Dietze were also used for this.

Two expansions have been released for the game: Iron Sky: Invasion - Meteor Blitzkrieg and Iron Sky: Invasion - The Second Fleet . It received a rather below-average response.
