Hasta la vista (original title: Hasta la Vista! For Spanish "goodbye") is a Belgian drama with strong features of a road movie by director Geoffrey Enthoven from 2011. The main actors are Robrecht Vanden Thoren , Gilles De Schrijver and Tom Audenaert .

action

Hasta la vista is about three disabled twenty-somethings from Belgium : the neck down paralyzed Philip, Lars with a tumor disease in the final stages and the almost blind Jozef. In addition to their illnesses, the three also struggle with never having had sexual intercourse . So, on the advice of a friend, they decide to go to the northern Spanish brothel "El Cielo", which specializes in the disabled.

The parents initially agree, as the trip is disguised as a gourmet trip along the French Wine Route . This changes when Lars' doctor advises against the trip because of his worsening condition. So, with the help of Lars' little sister and the new supervisor Claude, they decide to start the journey in secret.

Philips' aversion to fat Claude and the divergent ideas lead to strong conflicts during the journey, as a result of which the three of them, despite their obvious need for help, put themselves in involuntary malfunctions, which culminate in Jozef's only courageous intervention before drowning Pond can be saved. This low point causes a rethink, which is why a new relationship of trust is formed between the supervisor and the cared for, but also between the friends among themselves.

However, this idyll is suddenly interrupted by the parents of the disabled, who have meanwhile been able to track down their children, but after a heated discussion can be convinced that the four of them can continue their journey to Spain.

Once there, the three of them become aware of their illnesses again: because of their disabilities, they are turned away by Spanish girls, and later Lars noticeably suffers from his progressive illness, which is why they cannot get closer to Reina. The next day these outbreaks prevent a successful visit to the brothel. This new quarrel can, however, be quenched the next day by a moment of happiness for all three: Philip and Lars finally experience their first time in the brothel, Jozef stays behind and experiences Claude's affection.

After this experience, the three of them go back to experience the happiness of camping again. Lars dies of the consequences of his illness at the sea. Claude and Jozef stay in Spain together. Philip flies back happy.

background

The background was a real incident that was taken up in the BBC documentary "ForOneNightOnly": Asta Philpot, who cannot move most of his body, went to the aforementioned brothel with two other disabled people.

According to the press release, the director looked for suitable leading actors for around 1.5 years, but finally decided on non-disabled actors.

criticism

Above all, reviews praise the authenticity with which Enthoven describes the characters. It is said of people “who have to bear a great deal of burden, who fight against their illnesses and try to cope with them, and that this is not always easy. And the non-disabled people, figures like Claude (Isabelle de Hertogh), have their weaknesses, their past, their "handicap" - things that burden them and that prevent them from what is generally considered to be "normal life". " It also highlights the sensitive narrative full of tenderness and understanding. The acting performance of the main actors is often praised.
