Angeliki Papoulia ( Greek Αγγελική Παπούλια , * 1975 in Agios Dimitrios near Athens ) is a Greek theater and film actress. She is best known for her roles in the films of Giorgos Lanthimos .

Life

After several short film roles between 1999 and 2002 and a smaller appearance in 2001 in Alexandria by Maria Iliou, she played a major film role for the first time as daughter Kiki in 2002 in the forerunner of the "new Greek cinema" Spirtokouto by Yannis Economidis .

Papoulia co-founded the Athens theater collective Blitz in 2004 and has been a permanent member of the ensemble ever since . The members work together on theater productions in which they look for answers to social questions.

This was followed in 2008 in Panos Karkanevatos Kala krymmena mystika (Athanasia Well Kept Secrets) as Georgia . For the role of the older daughter in Lanthimos' Dogtooth , she received the award for best actress at the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2009 together with her film partner Mary Tsoni, who was seen in the role of the younger daughter. She was also nominated for Best Actress at the Greek Film Academy 2010.

In Lanthimos' Alpis she played a nurse who comforted lonely people and mimed loved ones. In 2011 Papoulia played Anna Petrovna in a production of Lanthimos in Chekhov's Platonov at the Athens National Theater .

After the short film Vrochi , shot in 2002 , A Blast was the second collaboration with Syllas Tzoumerkas in 2014 . The film premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival , Angeliki Papoulia cast the "impressively intensely played" lead role of Maria and was nominated for best actress by the Greek Film Academy the following year. In The Lobster , Lanthimos' first English-language film, Papoulia was seen as a heartless woman .

At the 69th International Film Festival in Locarno , Papoulia was a member of the jury for the Concorso Cineasti del Presente in 2016.
