action

The novel is introduced by events that happened several decades ago. It is mainly about women who are later murdered.

After that, the main plot around the protagonist Harry Hole begins in 2004. Hole is chief inspector in the Oslo police force and a more or less dry alcoholic. A new colleague, Katrine Bratt, is assigned to him. The self-confident young woman likes the otherwise introverted and lonely Hole, he willingly works with her. Now events come thick and fast: several young mothers are cruelly killed. First the trail leads to the cosmetic surgeon Idar Vetlesen, with whom all victims were treated. However, he is found murdered on a curling alley . The investigation also leads to Bergen , Katrine's hometown. A few years earlier women had died there under similar circumstances. The identifying mark of the murderer is also the same: a snowman. At that time, the policeman Gert Rafto who was working on this case mysteriously disappeared. Harry and his colleague discover Rafto's body in his vacation home. Next they suspect physics professor Filip Becker, whose wife is one of the victims of the serial killer. However, he is quickly eliminated as a perpetrator.

In addition to the police work, Hole's private life is also described again and again. He continues to meet with his former lover, Rakel, even though she is with Mathias, a doctor. Harry asks Mathias for help several times during the investigation.

The focus of the police is meanwhile on the well-known newspaper publisher Arve Støp. He had a relationship with several murder victims. Katrine then meets with Støp in his apartment and tries to force him to confess. In doing so, she reveals her true identity: She is Gert Rafto's daughter. She is found by Harry after her escape and admitted to a psychiatric ward. However, she cannot have committed the series of murders either. Harry finds out by chance that the bodies of the victims, which have disappeared without a trace, are hidden in the morgue . This clue leads him to Mathias, Rakel's friend. Now it comes to a showdown: Mathias has Rakel in his power in their house. When Harry arrives there, Squeegee is tied to a snowman with a glowing noose around her neck. Harry manages to save her, but loses a finger in the process. Nevertheless, he manages to arrest the fleeing Mathias.

Finally, Harry and Rakel are walking around a lake. Harry reveals to her that he will be leaving Norway.
