Maurice Roëves

Maurice Roëves (born March 19, 1937 in Sunderland , Tyne and Wear , † July 15, 2020 ) was a British film and theater actor .

Life

Although born in England , Roëves lived most of his life in Scotland . In his childhood he suffered from asthma . After completing his military service, Roëves initially worked in the commercial sector. In addition, he was involved in independent acting groups. This resulted in his career reorientation and professional acting training at the Glasgow College of Dramatic Art . He then worked as an assistant theater director at the Citizens Theater in Glasgow . As an actor, he played his first roles in various plays.

The offer to act as understudy for Albert Finney at London's Royal National Theater was turned down by Roëves in 1966 in favor of a supporting role in the adventure film Donegal, King of the Rebels . A year later he was able to take on a leading role in the film drama Ulysses based on the novel by James Joyce . Other well-known films in which Roëves took part in the course of his further career were, among others, The Eagle Has Landed , The Last of the Mohicans , Judge Dredd and Beautiful Creatures . The actor was often subscribed to the portrayal of film villains or hardened characters.

In addition to his career as a film actor, Roëves was also active again on the theater stage over the years, replacing his fellow actor Alec Guinness (title role of McDuff) in a performance of William Shakespeare's Macbeth at London's Royal Court Theater . In the following years Roëves was still involved in various performances at the Royal Court Theater.

Roëves was the father of a daughter from a previous marriage to Scottish actress Jan Wilson.
