action

The 27-year-old Veronika is bored with life. She's pretty, has a well-paid job, and lives in New York. But one day she decides to take her own life. She is taking an overdose of medication. But Veronika is found and survives the suicide attempt. When she regains consciousness, she finds herself in the psychiatry Villette back to where she is told that her heart had suffered damage from the overdose and I will die within a few weeks.

From then on, Veronika lives the life of a madwoman in the clinic and begins an emotional bond with a young man named Edward. Slowly but surely, Veronika begins to make friends with life again - knowing that she will soon die. She and Edward flee the mental institution to - as she believes - enjoy the last days of her life.

Towards the end of the film, however, it turns out that Veronika is physically healthy and has survived her suicide attempt without permanent medical consequences. The attending psychiatrist Dr. Blake has deliberately misdiagnosed Veronika's impending death experimentally in order to use such a therapeutic trick to relieve Veronika of her fatigue. According to his unorthodox view, the bitterness of life in suicide-prone patients, which is triggered by a body poison called "vitriol", can only be effectively treated through awareness of death. Dr. Blake's experiment in Veronica's therapy ultimately proves to be successful.

criticism

“Despite having a convincing leading actress,“ Veronika decides to die ”can only be recommended to a limited extent. With one exception, completely predictable and therefore long-winded for a long time, since everything works towards the final moral of the story, the film could at best appeal to fans of the original, who shouldn't expect too much, as much has been left out before everything that concerns the secondary characters, which here serve only as accessories. "

- Jonas Reinartz, Filmstarts.de

“It's about the good feeling of being in the world, about the affirmation of life and the [...] fight for it, freely after Martin Heidegger. Veronika brings the "conscious" dying back to the here and now, the modern score by Murray Gold grounds the film in our reality. A philosophical work, but not cerebral, a clever interpretation of a novel that avoids kitsch and clichés. That's rare in contemporary cinema. "

- Kino.de

“A British woman is directing a Brazilian author in an American production with an actress in the lead role who is primarily known from teen horror films. The question arises as to whether that can go well. And it works. Director Emily Young is sensitive and unconventional by American standards. Although the plot was moved from Slovenia to New York, the style is often reminiscent of Eastern European films, which is certainly also due to the fact that Young enjoyed her film training at the university in Łódź, Poland. Sarah Michelle Gellar shines in the lead role with her nuanced and never intrusive play and successfully swims away from her image. "

- Eric Horst, Filmkunstkinos.de

“VERONIKA DECIDES TO DIE is a difficult film. He philosophizes about death, the definition of mental health, our perception (and the general consensus) of reality and, last but not least, the deeper meaning of life. The film has a message, but it's not intrusive. It sets thought processes in motion. And it ends on a note that you would not have expected, but which ends this story nicely. "

- Peter Osteried, Six-shooter.de

“All in all, it is a worth seeing, not exactly easy film that is technically superior, but unfortunately there is a little lack of the story. Still worthwhile ... OFDb.de "

"The pictures and the excellent actors make" Veronika "a sensitive parable about the miracle of life."

- TVSpielfilm.de

“Fortunately, the film doesn't rely on babbling characters, but on images and expressive actors. Much is not said, not pronounced, not rolled flat. And that's exactly what makes the film a good Coelho adaptation. "

- Literaturcafe.de

The Focus praises in his review of the film, especially the acting of Sarah Michelle Gellar that "the role of the lonely, embittered Veronika" dating back find in life, "empathetic" play without sentimentality and thus prove that they "talent for Character roles ”.
